Sri Lanka at a glance
Sri Lanka — formerly Ceylon until 1972 — is a 65,000 km² tropical island (slightly larger than Ireland) off the southern tip of India in the Indian Ocean. 22 million inhabitants, two main peoples (Sinhalese Buddhists 75%, Tamil Hindus 15%, Moor Muslims 10%), three official languages (Sinhala, Tamil, English), and a history dating back to the 4th century BC with the first Buddhist kingdoms.
The country splits geographically into five major tourist regions: the Cultural Triangle in the centre-north (Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Dambulla — 4 concentrated UNESCO sites); the Hill Country or tea country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella — Lipton, Dilmah plantations, mythical railway stations); the southwest coast (Colombo, Bentota, Galle, Mirissa — tropical beaches and UNESCO Dutch fort); the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay — opposite season, surf, near-deserted beaches); and the north and Jaffna (Tamil region, long closed during the civil war 1983-2009, now reopening).
Sri Lanka is one of Asia's best destinations for combining culture (8 UNESCO sites, including Sigiriya Lion Rock and Kandy's Temple of the Tooth), nature (26 national parks, wild elephants, Yala leopards, Mirissa blue whales), and beaches (preserved tropical coastlines on two opposite sides of the island). The train ride through the tea plantations between Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella is one of the world's most iconic rail experiences.
The 2022 economic crisis and sovereign default hit the country hard. Tourism collapsed then rebounded spectacularly in 2024-2025 — Sri Lanka is today one of the most accessible Asian destinations for European travellers, with excellent value thanks to the devalued rupee.
What we love
- ✅Exceptional cultural density: 8 UNESCO sites on an island the size of Ireland
- ✅Unique landscape diversity: tropical beaches, high-altitude tea plantations, jungles, archaeological sites
- ✅Excellent value for money since the 2022 crisis: devalued rupee, comfortable traveller budget €50/day
- ✅Exceptional wildlife: elephants, leopards (Yala), blue whales (Mirissa), endemic birds
- ✅Remarkably warm people, English widely spoken, high safety outside remote rural areas
What to know
- ❌Two opposite monsoons complicate itinerary: southwest dry Dec-Mar, east dry May-Sep
- ❌Slow and chaotic roads (driver recommended): 100 km = 3h average
- ❌Tourism re-exploding post-2022 crisis: Sigiriya and Mirissa can be saturated in high season
- ❌Distance from France: 10-12h flight with stopover (Doha, Dubai) — long for short stays

Our verdict
Sri Lanka is one of Asia's top destinations today — exceptional cultural concentration (8 UNESCO sites), unique landscape diversity across 65,000 km², world-class wildlife (Yala leopards, Mirissa blue whales), and excellent value since the 2022 economic crisis. Logistics are demanding (2 opposite monsoons, slow roads) but easily managed with a chauffeur-guide (€50-80/day, English-speaking standard). Visit December to March for the southwest and centre (Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Mirissa) or May to September for the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay). Allow at least 12-14 days to do it justice — a week is not enough for such a dense country.
