Mont-Saint-Michel
The thousand-year-old abbey between sky and sea, in a bay with 14m tidal amplitude: the "Wonder of the West" draws 2.5 million visitors per year.
Mont-Saint-Michel is one of France's most iconic sites and one of the most visited in Europe (2.5 million visitors per year). UNESCO World Heritage-listed since 1979, the 92-metre rock crowned with its 11th-century Benedictine abbey rises in the middle of an immense bay swept by Europe's highest tides (up to 14 metres of range). During the equinox spring tides (March and September), the Mount truly becomes an island again for a few hours — a unique geological spectacle.
The abbey itself is an architectural masterpiece condensing a millennium of religious art: Crypt of the Large Pillars (11th century), Gothic Merveille (13th century) with three superimposed floors (cellar, guest hall, monks' refectory, cloister), abbey church at the summit. The visit (€9-15) requires 1h30-2h and offers exceptional panoramas of the bay. The Grand Rue leading to the abbey is very touristy and commercial, but the side lanes and ramparts allow you to find some tranquillity.
The Mont-Saint-Michel bay (500 km²) is itself an exceptional site: wetlands, salt marshes (where the AOP lamb graze), shifting sandbanks. The bay crossing on foot (only with certified guide, €25-40, 2-4h depending on route) is one of Normandy's most beautiful experiences. Also to see: Pontorson (closest station, 8 km), Avranches (medieval town 22 km away, abbey manuscripts), Saint-Malo (50 km, corsair city).

Our verdict
Mont-Saint-Michel is one of those sites you can't miss at least once in your life — the iconic silhouette, the geological spectacle of the tides, the millennium of history make it an essential. Book your abbey ticket online (time slot at 9 or 9:30 am to avoid groups), allow 4-5h on site. If possible, sleep in Pontorson or Beauvoir to enjoy the Mount at sunset and early morning — the experience is radically different without the daytime hordes. Visit in May-June or September for the best conditions; check the tide calendar for the equinox spring tides (March/September) — unique spectacle.
