The Mont-Saint-Michel abbey is the absolute essential. Construction spread over 8 centuries (11th-13th main): Crypt of the Large Pillars (supports the abbey church), Gothic Merveille (3 superimposed floors — cellar, guest hall, monks' refectory), suspended cloister (one of the most beautiful examples of Norman Gothic), abbey church at the summit (exceptional view of the bay). Free visit with audioguide (optional €3), or guided tour (€16, recommended to understand the millennial historical context). Allow 1h30-2h. Possible summer nocturnes (€12).
The ramparts and side lanes (outside the very commercial Grand Rue) allow you to discover a more peaceful Mount. Ramparts walk in 30-45 min with exceptional panoramic views. Saint-Pierre parish church (11th-16th centuries), cemetery, Abbot's Garden.
The bay crossing on foot is one of the most beautiful experiences. Only with mandatory certified guide (safety — shifting sands, fast tide). Several routes: 5 km (1h30, €25-30), 12 km Genêts → Mount (4h, €40, the most iconic), nighttime crossing at full moons (€35-45). Barefoot in shifting sands, mudflats, lunar landscapes. Booking 2-3 weeks ahead.
The bay itself can be discovered from several viewpoints: Mont-Dol (10 km away, panoramic view of the Mount from the hinterland), Avranches (22 km away, medieval town preserving the abbey's original manuscripts at the Scriptorial), Genêts (classic starting point for crossings), Pointe du Grouin (30 km away, the most beautiful coastal viewpoint).
Not to miss in the region: Saint-Malo (50 km away, walled corsair city, see our dedicated page), Cancale (French oyster capital, 50 km), Dinan (preserved medieval city 75 km away), Dinard (Belle Époque seaside resort 50 km), Cap Fréhel (spectacular red cliffs 70 km away), Fougères (fortified castle 85 km).
Avoid: Grand Rue fast-foods and tourist-menu restaurants (mediocre value), identical souvenir shops. Head to off-the-beaten-path restaurants or off-Mount for better food.
