Annecy
Turquoise Lake Annecy (among the world's purest), Old Annecy with canals and Palais de l'Isle, direct Alpine access: Annecy combines lake beauty and Alpine art of living.
Annecy (the "Venice of the Alps") is one of France's most appreciated cities. Located on the shores of Lake Annecy — one of the world's purest Alpine lakes (29 km², 14.6 km long, 82 m deep) with unique crystal-clear turquoise blue-green water. Nicknamed "Europe's purest lake" (near-zero pollution rate thanks to a pioneering collective sanitation system in 1960), the lake attracts 3 million visitors per year and hosts 250,000 inhabitants in its metropolitan area.
Annecy's Old Town is one of France's most picturesque. It unfolds around the Thiou canals (river that flows from the lake and crosses the city) — hence its nickname "Venice of the Alps". Essentials: Palais de l'Isle (former 12th-century prison perched on a triangular islet in the middle of the Thiou — Annecy's iconic image), Lovers' Bridge (romantic point between the Europe garden and the Pâquier, legend says couples who kiss there stay together for life), Annecy Château (museum, 13th-16th centuries, panoramic view), Saint-Pierre Cathedral (16th century), Visitation Basilica (above the town, exceptional view). The Old Town market (Tuesday-Friday-Sunday morning) is one of Savoie's most authentic.
The lake itself is the major attraction. Free public beaches (Marquisats, Albigny, Saint-Jorioz, Sevrier) or paid (Impérial Palace, Plage des Marquisats — €5-10/day). Water activities: sailing, paddle, kayak, diving (Inuit Dive school), electric boat (Annecy Boat Cruise). Lake tour by bike: 40 km of secure cycle paths on the former railway — one of Europe's most beautiful cycle rides (3-4h on MTB, possible on e-bike for the slopes). Excursions to lake villages: Talloires (east shore, the "Saint-Tropez of Annecy"), Menthon-Saint-Bernard (château, birthplace of Saint-Bernard), Duingt (peninsula), Sevrier.
Annecy is also the gateway to the Alps. Direct access: La Clusaz (40 min, family ski station), Le Grand-Bornand (45 min), Megève (1h, chic resort), Chamonix (1h, Mont Blanc 4,809 m), Évian and Geneva (1h, Lake Geneva, Swiss border). Aravis massif (hiking, Tournette 2,351 m), Fier gorges (spectacular canyon 10 km), Pont de l'Abîme (Faverges). 35 min away, Geneva (Switzerland, jet d'eau, old town). 1h by train, Lyon (gastronomic capital).

Our verdict
Annecy is one of Europe's most beautiful Alpine cities — turquoise lake among the world's purest, picturesque Old Town ("Venice of the Alps"), direct Alpine access. Allow 2-3 days for the city and lake (Palais de l'Isle, lake tour by bike, swimming, châteaux). Combine with 2-3 days in the Alps (Chamonix + Mont Blanc, or ski in winter) for 5-7 days. Visit in June-September for the lake (swimming, sailing, biking), in December-March for skiing. Avoid July-August for absolute crowds. If possible, sleep in Talloires or Menthon-Saint-Bernard (quieter shores) to avoid the central Annecy crush.
