Avignon
Palace of the Popes (UNESCO), Europe's largest Gothic fortress, Avignon Bridge, major theatre festival: Avignon is the historic capital of Provence.
Avignon is the former capital of the papacy (1309-1377, under 7 French popes of the "Avignon papacy"). From this exceptional period, the city preserves the Palace of the Popes — Europe's largest Gothic fortress (15,000 m², UNESCO-listed since 1995). It is one of France's most impressive historic sites, with its imposing towers, chapels adorned with Matteo Giovannetti's frescoes, Grand Audience and ceremonial staircase.
Around the palace, the historic city (UNESCO) unfolds its intact ramparts (4 km, among Europe's best preserved medieval), Place de l'Horloge (lively heart, terraces, opera), Maison Jean Vilar (founder of the Avignon Festival in 1947). The Avignon Bridge (Pont Saint-Bénézet, 12th-13th century, UNESCO) — famous through the song "Sur le pont d'Avignon, on y danse, on y danse" — is an interrupted medieval bridge (only 4 of the original 22 arches remain, the bridge being regularly destroyed by Rhône floods).
Avignon's cultural life is exceptional. The Avignon Festival (theatre, created in 1947 by Jean Vilar) is France's most important theatre festival — every July, the city becomes the world capital of theatre with the "In" (official programme) and the "Off" (1,500 shows in 130 venues). The Calvet Museum (Fine Arts collection), the Lapidary Museum (archaeology), the Lambert Collection (contemporary art) and the Calvet Foundation complete the cultural offer.
Nearby: Pont du Gard (UNESCO, Roman aqueduct, 25 min by car), Orange (Roman antique theatre UNESCO, 30 min), Arles (Roman arenas, Saint-Trophime, Alyscamps — all UNESCO, 45 min), Châteauneuf-du-Pape (legendary vineyards, 20 min), Les Baux-de-Provence (Most Beautiful Village, 50 min), Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (Van Gogh, 30 min). Avignon is the ideal gateway to explore Provence.

Our verdict
Avignon is one of the most beautiful historic cities in Provence — UNESCO Palace of the Popes (Europe's largest Gothic fortress), iconic Avignon Bridge, intact ramparts, Avignon Festival in July. Allow 2-3 days for the city (Palace, Bridge, ramparts, Calvet Museum, Place de l'Horloge), then 3-5 days to combine with Pont du Gard, Orange, Arles, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Visit in April-June (before the Festival) or September-October (harvest, optimal month) for the best conditions. Avoid July for the Festival if you don't like crowds and tripled prices — or book 6 months ahead to experience the unique theatrical event.
