Guadeloupe

Budget — Guadeloupe

Mid-to-upper range — from €105/day/person; budget travel from €60-80, comfort from €150-200
Overall level: mid-upper · $113 / day reference

Guadeloupe is one of the more expensive tropical destinations for a French traveller, mainly due to flight costs, on-island cost of living (imports) and the absence of very-low-cost structures. The reference budget of €105/day/person covers a comfortable mid-range stay.

A comfort traveller for two people will plan: hotel or Creole guesthouse €70-110/night for two, compact car hire €40/day, lunch in a beach lolo (€10-15/person), dinner in a Creole restaurant (€20-35/person), site entries and activities (Carbet Falls, National Park €5-10, Cousteau Reserve dive €60-80).

The budget traveller can manage on €60-80/day by opting for: hostel or campsite (€15-30/night), meals at the market or popular lolos (€8-15), shared vehicle with other travellers, free activities (beaches, Soufrière hike without a guide). The luxury traveller finds their match in La Toubana in Sainte-Anne (€300-500/night), La Plantation in Saint-François or Auberge de la Vieille Tour in Gosier (€200-350).

By cost category: accommodation (35-40% of budget) — Creole guesthouse €50-80/night, 3-star hotel €80-150, boutique hotel €150-300, resort €250-500. Food (25-30%) — bokit €4-8, ti-punch €3-5, lolo meal €12-18, Creole restaurant €25-40/person, gastronomic €60-100. Sites and activities (15%) — Carbet Falls €2.30 (Fall 1) or free (Fall 2 on trail), National Park entry free, Cousteau Reserve diving €60-80 (2-tank outing), Petite-Terre catamaran excursion €90-120/person, distillery tour €5-10 with tasting. Transport (15-20%) — car hire €35-55/day, fuel €1.60-1.80/litre, Saintes shuttle €30-40 return, taxi PTP-Sainte-Anne €60-80.

A few practical pointers: the French Carte Vitale works normally (Pointe-à-Pitre CHU, private clinics). EU roaming works without surcharge with your mainland French plan — no local SIM needed. Bank cards Visa and Mastercard are accepted everywhere; cash is needed only in small lolos and markets. Tipping is not compulsory but appreciated (5-10% in restaurants for notable service). Beaches are public and free — beware of vendors who claim to rent access to a pitch. Remember to respect the Creole siesta: between 12:30 and 14:00, many shops close.
