Basse-Terre

When to go — Basse-Terre

Basse-Terre runs on a humid tropical climate, with two clearly marked seasons that structure the whole visiting experience.

The dry season (carême, December to April) is the ideal period to discover Basse-Terre. Temperatures sit at 24-30 °C on the coasts, cooler in the mountainous interior (17-22 °C at 700 m altitude in Saint-Claude at night). Rains are brief and concentrated in late afternoon, sunshine is maximal and Caribbean trade winds cool the leeward coast. It's the perfect time for the Soufrière hike (often clear summit visibility in the morning), diving the Cousteau Reserve (calm sea, 20-30 m visibility) and swimming at Deshaies. Book accommodation 3 to 4 months ahead for Christmas and February.

May is an excellent shoulder season: weather remains very favourable, crowds have already left the archipelago, first rains have re-greened the jungle without yet saturating trails. The Carbet Falls regain a comfortable flow after their winter low.

The wet season (hivernage, June to November) transforms Basse-Terre. The primary tropical forest is at its peak — intense green, brilliant tree ferns, very active fauna (hummingbirds, tree frogs, agoutis), waterfalls at maximum flow. It's also the rainiest season, with sometimes several days of tropical showers in a row in September-October. The hurricane season peaks from August to October — stay attentive to Météo-France Antilles bulletins. Outside July-August (French school holidays), prices are at their lowest and the archipelago is experienced in a more local atmosphere.
