Basse-Terre

Getting around — Basse-Terre

Basse-Terre absolutely requires car hire. Public transport (Karu'Lis bus network) is almost non-existent between the interior villages, hiking trails and the Route de la Traversée. A car is the only practical solution.

Agencies (Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Jumbo Car) are concentrated at Pôle Caraïbes airport in Pointe-à-Pitre, 1h-1h30 drive from Basse-Terre depending on your destination. Plan €35-55/day for a compact — mandatory booking in peak season (frequent stock-outs). Preferably choose a compact, well-suspended car: some interior roads (D11 to Saint-Claude, D23 on the Traversée) are winding and narrow.

Travel times from Pôle Caraïbes: Deshaies 1h, Sainte-Rose 45 min, Bouillante 1h15, Saint-Claude 1h15, Basse-Terre town 1h30, Trois-Rivières 1h30. Between Basse-Terre sites: Deshaies-Bouillante 30 min, Saint-Claude-Capesterre Belle-Eau 50 min (via the coast) or 30 min (via the Traversée).

Driving is to French standards (right side, seatbelt mandatory, usual limits). Watch out for tropical rains that make roads slippery, potholes on secondary roads and the sometimes sporting driving of locals on bends. Fill up before exploring the interior — petrol stations are concentrated on the coasts. Fuel costs €1.60-1.80/litre.

For excursions to satellite islands: maritime shuttles to Les Saintes from Trois-Rivières (45 min, €30 return, several daily rotations via L'Express des Îles or Iguana) or from Pointe-à-Pitre (1h, €40). Marie-Galante from Pointe-à-Pitre or Saint-François. Air Antilles flights exist to Marie-Galante and La Désirade (15 min, €50-90).
