Deshaies
The most charming Creole village of Basse-Terre: Coluche's Botanical Garden, Grande Anse (one of Guadeloupe's finest beaches), La Perle Beach and the world-famous filming location of the BBC series 'Death in Paradise'.
Deshaies is one of the most beautiful fishing villages in the French Antilles — a Creole village of 4,500 inhabitants nestled on the Caribbean coast in north-west Basse-Terre, 1 hour drive from Pôle Caraïbes. Its charm lies in a rare balance: a protected bay lined with a golden sand beach, a traditional port animated by colourful fishing boats (fresh fish landed every morning), a village of Creole houses with blue shutters and red roofs, and a mountainous green hinterland that plunges directly into the Caribbean Sea.
Deshaies' international reputation comes largely from two elements: the Deshaies Botanical Garden (laid out by the French comedian Coluche in the 1980s and opened to the public in 2001 after his death) — one of the most beautiful tropical gardens in the Antilles, 7 hectares dedicated to over 1,000 plant species, sheltering pink flamingos, parrots, peacocks and Koi carp in a spectacular setting. And the British TV series 'Death in Paradise' (broadcast on BBC One since 2011), entirely filmed in Deshaies under the fictional name 'Honoré, Saint-Marie island' — the commissioner's house on the beach, 'Catherine's bar', the church, the colourful lanes are world-recognisable settings that have made the village internationally famous.
Deshaies beaches are among the most beautiful in Basse-Terre. Grande Anse Beach (3 km north of the village) is the emblem — 800 m of golden sand, crystalline turquoise water, coconut palms at the edge, panoramic view of Montserrat on a clear day. It's one of the most beautiful beaches in the French Antilles, perfect for family swimming and the iconic sunset. La Perle Beach (5 km north) is more discreet and authentic, frequented by locals. Amandiers Beach (south of the village) is wild and preserved. Beyond the beaches, Deshaies offers an excellent base for exploring north-west Basse-Terre — hiking to Saut d'Acomat (waterfall in tropical forest), diving at the Cousteau Reserve (30 min by car to Bouillante), excursion to Pointe Allègre (north-west tip of Basse-Terre).

Our verdict
Deshaies is one of the most beautiful fishing villages in the French Antilles — the ideal base for discovering Basse-Terre's Caribbean coast in its authentic charm. Coluche's Botanical Garden, the iconic Grande Anse beach, the world-famous BBC 'Death in Paradise' settings and the traditional port compose a Caribbean experience of rare richness. Devote minimum 3-4 days to fully enjoy: Botanical Garden, Grande Anse and La Perle beaches, excursion to the Cousteau Reserve, dinner on the port. Prefer family Creole guesthouses (€70-120/night) or an eco-lodge with sea view. Combine with a Soufrière hike (1h15 drive) and a day in Pointe-à-Pitre (1h drive) for a complete stay.
