Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need in Split?+
Two to three days are enough for Diocletian's Palace, the Riva, the green market, Marjan hill and Bačvice beach. To combine Split with the Dalmatian islands (Hvar, Brač, Vis), allow at least one week in the area — e.g. 3 nights in Split + 2 on Hvar + 2 on Vis. Split is one of the best urban bases in Croatia: plan your last night here before flying home from Split-Kaštela airport.
Is Diocletian's Palace free to visit?+
Yes, largely. Because the palace is a living city, you walk in freely through the monumental gates (Golden, Silver, Iron, Bronze). The peristyle, the alleys, the central square and the seafront are accessible 24/7 for free. Paid sites: the __basement halls__ (€5, Game of Thrones filming location), __St Domnius Cathedral__ (€3, the former mausoleum of Diocletian), the __bell tower__ (€5, panoramic view), the __Temple of Jupiter__ (€2). Plan €15-20 to visit all the paid monuments.
How do I get from Split to Hvar or the other islands?+
Split is the Adriatic's biggest __ferry hub__. Jadrolinija and Krilo operate dozens of daily crossings. __Fast catamarans__ (passengers only, more expensive): Split-Hvar Town 1h, €28-35. __Jadrolinija car ferries__ (cheaper, slower): Split-Stari Grad (Hvar) 2h, €7 passenger + €50-70 car. Book your car crossings __several weeks ahead__ in July-August. Other destinations: Brač 50 minutes, Vis 2h30 (catamaran) or 4h (ferry), Korčula 2h (catamaran).
When should I visit Split? Avoid Ultra Europe?+
__May-June and September__ are ideal: perfect temperatures (22-28 °C), warm sea from June, manageable crowds. __July-August__ is very busy. The __Ultra Europe__ festival (3 days around 13-15 July, 100,000 international attendees) saturates the city and its hotels — avoid unless you're a fan of EDM and crowds. The __Split Summer Festival__ (mid-July to mid-August) stages operas and classical plays in the palace peristyle, a unique experience.
Which neighbourhood to stay in?+
__Inside the palace__: unique atmosphere, dead centre, but noisy at night, little parking. Apartmans €80-150/night. __Veli Varoš__ (just west of the palace): traditional fishermen's quarter, stone alleys, authentic atmosphere, 5 minutes' walk from the Riva. __Bačvice__ (10 minutes' walk east): near Split's only sandy beach, good value. __Marjan__ (west of the peninsula): quieter, bay views, for those who prefer nature.
What are the best beaches near Split?+
__Bačvice__ is the best known: 10 minutes' walk from the palace, fine sand (rare in Croatia), shallow water — ideal for families and picigin (a traditional Splitčani game). __Kasjuni__ and __Bene__, at the foot of Marjan, are pebble beaches in wooded settings, much quieter. For the finest beaches, take the ferry to __Brač__ (Zlatni Rat, the horn-shaped beach at Bol — 1 hour from Split) or __Hvar__ (Pakleni Islands beaches).

Our verdict

Split is one of the Mediterranean's finest urban discoveries. Diocletian's Palace — a living city built inside a Roman palace of AD 305 — is an architectural experience without equal in the world. The atmosphere is far more authentic than Dubrovnik's: 3,000 residents still live inside the walls, cafés and restaurants are full of Splitčani, the Riva keeps its social function as the evening passeggiata. Add Marjan hill for nature, Bačvice beach for swimming, and above all the role of ferry hub to Hvar, Brač, Vis and Korčula — one of the best bases imaginable for exploring Dalmatia. Visit in May-June or September, allow 3 nights on land and at least 4-5 extra nights on the islands.
