Cairns

Cairns is the most practical gateway to the Great Barrier Reef (UNESCO 1981) — international airport, huge choice of catamaran Outer Reef excursions, and direct access to UNESCO Daintree Rainforest (world's oldest rainforest).

4.60Grande Barrière de Corail

Cairns (160,000 inhabitants) is the main gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and Queensland's 4th city. Located at the extreme tropical north of the Australian east coast (1,700 km north of Brisbane, tropical climate with wet season November-April and dry season May-October), it is the ideal tourist base to explore the world's largest coral reef and the Daintree Rainforest (UNESCO, world's oldest rainforest at 180 million years).

The city itself is not particularly photogenic — it is above all a base town for excursions. The centre organises around the Cairns Esplanade (urban waterfront with free saltwater pool — the 'lagoon', as sea swimming is prohibited in Cairns due to saltwater crocodiles and jellyfish), night markets (Cairns Night Markets, open year-round, Aboriginal crafts, street food), aquarium (Cairns Aquarium, AUD 50, the only one presenting complete reef and Daintree ecosystems), Reef Fleet Terminal (marina for Outer Reef excursion departures), and the hotel zone (Esplanade and Cairns Central).

The Outer Reef is the signature experience. Several operators offer day excursions in fast catamaran from Cairns (AUD 180-280/person snorkelling, AUD 280-380 with bottle diving) to Norman Reef, Hastings Reef, Saxon Reef sites 2h at sea. Major operators: Quicksilver (high-end reference, departure from Port Douglas), Reef Magic, Reef Experience, Passions of Paradise (green catamaran, ecological certification), Down Under Cruise and Dive. The liveaboard cruises to Coral Sea Reefs (Osprey Reef notably, 3-7 days) are reserved for serious divers (AUD 2,000-4,000/person).

The Daintree Rainforest (UNESCO 1988, 1h30 north of Cairns via Port Douglas) is the other great experience — the world's oldest rainforest (180 million years, older than the Amazon). Cape Tribulation (where James Cook ran aground on the reef in 1770, hence the 'Tribulation' name) is the emblematic point — white sand beach bordered by tropical rainforest. Guided excursion from Cairns AUD 150-250/person including Daintree River crossing by ferry, canopy hike (Mossman Gorge with Aboriginal Kuku Yalanji guide), possible observation of cassowary (giant flightless bird, dinosaur relative, dangerous but magnificent).

The Atherton Tablelands (1h west of Cairns, mountain plateau at 700-1,200 m) offer a cooler climate, spectacular waterfalls (Millaa Millaa Falls — Australia's most photographed, Josephine Falls, Zillie Falls), coffee and macadamia nut plantations, and Lake Eacham (volcanic crater with pure water). Ideal to escape tropical heat.

Cairns is also a vibrant backpacker town (YHA, Base, Nomads hostels — AUD 25-40 dorm), with dynamic nightlife on Lake Street and Esplanade. The cruise ship arrival port (Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises) adds to the international atmosphere.

Frequently asked questions

How many days for Cairns?+
Plan 3 to 4 days minimum. Essential itinerary: Day 1 — Outer Reef day excursion by catamaran (Quicksilver, Passions of Paradise, Reef Magic — AUD 180-280/person snorkelling, AUD 280-380 with 1-2 bottle dives, 8am departure-5pm return, 2-3 reef sites, buffet lunch on board). Day 2 — Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation (guided excursion AUD 150-250/person, 7am-6pm departure, Daintree River ferry crossing, Mossman Gorge canopy hike with Kuku Yalanji guide, Cape Tribulation beach). Day 3 — Atherton Tablelands (car rental AUD 60, Millaa Millaa-Josephine-Zillie waterfalls circular route, Lake Eacham, coffee and macadamia plantations) OR Green Island (ferry excursion AUD 95-130, snorkelling and coral island visit). Day 4 — Kuranda (mountain historic village, accessible by Kuranda Scenic Railway historic train AUD 70 and Skyrail cableway AUD 80, signature tourist experience).
Why can't you swim in the sea at Cairns?+
Two main reasons. (1) Saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus, salties): present in all rivers, estuaries and even far north Queensland beaches — can attack on land and water, several deaths per year. 'Crocodiles in this area' signs ABSOLUTELY to respect. Cairns Esplanade beach (and most urban beaches) is officially prohibited for swimming. (2) Box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri): present October to May in tropical waters, extremely violent venom, several deaths per year. Official alternative for urban swimming: the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon — free saltwater pool by the Esplanade, secured and popular (open 6am-10pm, free, showers and toilets). For real sea, go to the Northern Beaches (Trinity Beach, Palm Cove 15-30 min by car — equipped with anti-jellyfish protection nets in season, but crocodile vigilance still necessary). Outer Reef snorkelling is always in stinger suit (AUD 5-10 rental on board) in jellyfish season.
Cairns or Port Douglas: where to stay?+
Cairns (160,000 inhabitants) is the economical and practical base: international airport, huge hotel choice (all categories — hostels AUD 25-40 dorm, 3* hotels AUD 100-180, 4* hotels AUD 200-350), huge excursion choice, vibrant backpacker atmosphere. Suits budget and mid-range stays, first trips, young travellers. Port Douglas (1h north, 4,500 inhabitants) is the chic alternative: refined seaside village, high-end restaurants, premium resorts (Sheraton Mirage AUD 350-600/night, Pullman Port Douglas AUD 250-450), iconic Four Mile Beach, direct Daintree Rainforest access. The honeymoon and exclusive stay choice. For optimal 3-4 days: 2 days in Cairns (Outer Reef, accessible prices), 2 days in Port Douglas (Daintree, chic atmosphere). For 5-7 days, add 2-3 days at Whitsundays via Hamilton Island.
Which Outer Reef excursion to choose?+
Several major operators, to choose by profile. Quicksilver (high-end reference, Port Douglas departure to Agincourt Reef — the most preserved outer reef, fixed pontoon at sea for meals and activities, AUD 250-300/person, ideal first trip and non-divers). Reef Magic (Cairns to Marine World fixed pontoon, AUD 230-280, similar but more economical). Passions of Paradise (Cairns to Michaelmas Cay and Paradise Reef, 'green' catamaran with Reef Tourism Climate Action ecological certification — AUD 180-220, the ethical and ecological option). Reef Experience (Cairns to Hastings Reef and Saxon Reef, AUD 200-250, good value). Down Under Cruise and Dive (Cairns, diving specialist, AUD 280-380 with 2 dives). All include buffet lunch, snorkelling equipment, stinger suit in season, hotel-port transfers. Book 1-2 weeks ahead in high season (June-September).
When is the best time for Cairns?+
Austral winter (June to September) is by far the best period — perfect climate (20-26 °C, dry, low humidity), calm sea, maximum underwater visibility (20-30 m), no box jellyfish (free swimming without stinger suit), no cyclones. It is also the humpback whale watching season (July-September, excursions AUD 150-250). Tourist peak in July-August: hotel rates at maximum, 3-6 month advance booking. May and October are excellent shoulder seasons (still perfect climate, moderate crowds, lower rates). Avoid November to April: wet tropical season with lethal box jellyfish (stinger suit mandatory), cyclone season (Yasi 2011, Debbie 2017, Jasper 2023), crushing humidity (80-90%), frequent tropical rain. Only advantages: lowest rates, warm sea (28-30 °C).

Our verdict

Cairns is the most practical and economical gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest. Plan 3-4 nights minimum: 1 day Outer Reef by catamaran (Quicksilver, Passions of Paradise, AUD 180-280), 1 day Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation (excursion AUD 150-250), 1 day Atherton Tablelands (car rental, waterfalls), possibly 1 day Green Island or Fitzroy Island. For a more chic stay, alternate with Port Douglas (1h north, more exclusive, direct Outer Reef and Daintree access). Imperatively prioritise austral winter (June-September) — no box jellyfish, dry climate, calm sea, maximum diving visibility. Avoid November-April (cyclones, jellyfish, crushing humidity).
