Things to do — Cairns

Essential activities in Cairns and surroundings.

Outer Reef day excursion (signature experience, departure from Reef Fleet Terminal at 8am): 2h by fast catamaran to outer reef sites (Norman Reef, Hastings Reef, Saxon Reef, Michaelmas Cay), 4-5h on site with 2-3 snorkelling/diving sites, buffet lunch on board, 5pm return. Prices: AUD 180-280/person snorkelling, AUD 280-380 with bottle diving. Operators: Quicksilver (high-end reference), Reef Magic, Passions of Paradise (eco-certified), Reef Experience, Down Under Cruise and Dive.

Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation (day excursion AUD 150-250/person, 7am-6pm departure): Daintree River crossing by ferry, Mossman Gorge canopy hike with Aboriginal Kuku Yalanji guide, Cape Tribulation beach (where James Cook ran aground in 1770 — hence the 'Tribulation' name), possible observation of cassowary (giant flightless bird, dinosaur relative).

Atherton Tablelands (mountain plateau at 700-1,200 m, 1h west, car rental AUD 60/day): Millaa Millaa Falls (Australia's most photographed waterfall, possible photo behind the fall), Josephine Falls, Zillie Falls, Lake Eacham (volcanic crater with pure water), coffee plantations (Skybury Coffee) and macadamia nut, historic villages (Yungaburra, Atherton). Cooler climate than Cairns — ideal to escape tropical heat.

Kuranda (historic mountain village 25 km from Cairns): accessible by Kuranda Scenic Railway (1891 historic train, picturesque rainforest and Barron Falls route, AUD 70 return) and Skyrail Rainforest Cableway (7.5 km cableway above canopy, AUD 80 return). In the village: Heritage Markets and Original Rainforest Markets (Aboriginal crafts), Birdworld, Kuranda Koala Gardens. Train+cableway combination AUD 130-160/person, signature tourist day.

Offshore islands: Green Island (45 min by catamaran from Cairns, AUD 95-130 ferry, coral island with beach snorkelling, full day or overnight), Fitzroy Island (45 min, AUD 80-110, tropical forest, hikes, snorkelling).

Liveaboard cruises to Coral Sea Reefs (Osprey Reef notably, 3-7 days): for serious divers only (PADI Advanced minimum recommended), AUD 2,000-4,000/person all-inclusive, ultimate signature experience (grey reef sharks, manta rays, 40+ m visibility).

Panoramic seaplane flight over the reef (from Cairns or Port Douglas, AUD 250-400 for 30-60 min, GBR Helicopters or Reef Helicopters) — spectacular aerial perspectives.

In town (Cairns): Cairns Esplanade Lagoon (free saltwater pool, alternative to prohibited sea), Cairns Aquarium (AUD 50, reef + Daintree ecosystems), Cairns Night Markets (open year-round, Aboriginal crafts, street food), Crystal Cascades (waterfalls in forest 20 min by car, freshwater swimming, free), Botanic Gardens (free).

Humpback whale watching (July-September, from Cairns or Port Douglas): excursion AUD 150-250/person, migration to tropical waters for breeding.
