When to visit Cairns?

Plan 3 to 4 days minimum. Essential itinerary: Day 1 — Outer Reef day excursion by catamaran (Quicksilver, Passions of Paradise, Reef Magic — AUD 180-280/person snorkelling, AUD 280-380 with 1-2 bottle dives, 8am departure-5pm return, 2-3 reef sites, buffet lunch on board). Day 2 — Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation (guided excursion AUD 150-250/person, 7am-6pm departure, Daintree River ferry crossing, Mossman Gorge canopy hike with Kuku Yalanji guide, Cape Tribulation beach). Day 3 — Atherton Tablelands (car rental AUD 60, Millaa Millaa-Josephine-Zillie waterfalls circular route, Lake Eacham, coffee and macadamia plantations) OR Green Island (ferry excursion AUD 95-130, snorkelling and coral island visit). Day 4 — Kuranda (mountain historic village, accessible by Kuranda Scenic Railway historic train AUD 70 and Skyrail cableway AUD 80, signature tourist experience).

Two main reasons. (1) Saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus, salties): present in all rivers, estuaries and even far north Queensland beaches — can attack on land and water, several deaths per year. 'Crocodiles in this area' signs ABSOLUTELY to respect. Cairns Esplanade beach (and most urban beaches) is officially prohibited for swimming. (2) Box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri): present October to May in tropical waters, extremely violent venom, several deaths per year. Official alternative for urban swimming: the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon — free saltwater pool by the Esplanade, secured and popular (open 6am-10pm, free, showers and toilets). For real sea, go to the Northern Beaches (Trinity Beach, Palm Cove 15-30 min by car — equipped with anti-jellyfish protection nets in season, but crocodile vigilance still necessary). Outer Reef snorkelling is always in stinger suit (AUD 5-10 rental on board) in jellyfish season.

Cairns (160,000 inhabitants) is the economical and practical base: international airport, huge hotel choice (all categories — hostels AUD 25-40 dorm, 3* hotels AUD 100-180, 4* hotels AUD 200-350), huge excursion choice, vibrant backpacker atmosphere. Suits budget and mid-range stays, first trips, young travellers. Port Douglas (1h north, 4,500 inhabitants) is the chic alternative: refined seaside village, high-end restaurants, premium resorts (Sheraton Mirage AUD 350-600/night, Pullman Port Douglas AUD 250-450), iconic Four Mile Beach, direct Daintree Rainforest access. The honeymoon and exclusive stay choice. For optimal 3-4 days: 2 days in Cairns (Outer Reef, accessible prices), 2 days in Port Douglas (Daintree, chic atmosphere). For 5-7 days, add 2-3 days at Whitsundays via Hamilton Island.

Several major operators, to choose by profile. Quicksilver (high-end reference, Port Douglas departure to Agincourt Reef — the most preserved outer reef, fixed pontoon at sea for meals and activities, AUD 250-300/person, ideal first trip and non-divers). Reef Magic (Cairns to Marine World fixed pontoon, AUD 230-280, similar but more economical). Passions of Paradise (Cairns to Michaelmas Cay and Paradise Reef, 'green' catamaran with Reef Tourism Climate Action ecological certification — AUD 180-220, the ethical and ecological option). Reef Experience (Cairns to Hastings Reef and Saxon Reef, AUD 200-250, good value). Down Under Cruise and Dive (Cairns, diving specialist, AUD 280-380 with 2 dives). All include buffet lunch, snorkelling equipment, stinger suit in season, hotel-port transfers. Book 1-2 weeks ahead in high season (June-September).

Austral winter (June to September) is by far the best period — perfect climate (20-26 °C, dry, low humidity), calm sea, maximum underwater visibility (20-30 m), no box jellyfish (free swimming without stinger suit), no cyclones. It is also the humpback whale watching season (July-September, excursions AUD 150-250). Tourist peak in July-August: hotel rates at maximum, 3-6 month advance booking. May and October are excellent shoulder seasons (still perfect climate, moderate crowds, lower rates). Avoid November to April: wet tropical season with lethal box jellyfish (stinger suit mandatory), cyclone season (Yasi 2011, Debbie 2017, Jasper 2023), crushing humidity (80-90%), frequent tropical rain. Only advantages: lowest rates, warm sea (28-30 °C).
