Things to do — Northern

The Northern Circuit centres on 4x4 safari, the headline activity, but offers several complementary experiences.

The classic safari takes place in a Land Cruiser or Land Rover with open roof, with morning (6:30-11) and afternoon (3:30-6:30 pm) game drives that match the peaks of animal activity. Local guides, trained and certified, read the landscape with remarkable expertise: spotting a leopard track in the dust, anticipating a cheetah hunt from the behaviour of antelopes, translating hyena vocalisations. A standard day delivers sightings of several dozen species, and at minimum the expected Big Five in high season.

The headline experience of the Serengeti and Tarangire is the sunrise hot-air balloon flight (Serengeti Balloon Safari, Adventures Aloft). Take-off at 6 am from the central Serengeti zone or Tarangire, a 1-hour flight over the plains at 100-300 metres altitude, landing followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush. Count on 550-650 USD per person — expensive, but one of the most unforgettable experiences possible on the continent.

The descent into the Ngorongoro Crater is another highlight. 4x4s descend by the western road, open only for ascent in the morning and descent in the afternoon. A half-day on the crater floor delivers Big Five sightings, hippos at Hippo Pool, and often hyena or lion hunts. Exit is by the eastern road. The crater fee is 295 USD per vehicle (in addition to the 70.80 USD/day entry to the conservation area).

Maasai encounters can take several forms. Village visits organised by lodges are often staged and unsatisfying. Prefer operators who arrange authentic cattle markets (Tuesday at Loliondo, Thursday at Endulen), traditional family ceremonies, or days with a Maasai guide in their home village. Remote boma (traditional villages) north of Ngorongoro and east of the Serengeti offer the deepest encounters.

Hiking is possible in several areas — nature walks with Maasai guides in the Ngorongoro buffer zone, ascents of Mount Lemakarot (3,132 m) or Empakaai Crater, walks down Olmoti Crater. These activities, accessible from lodges on the Ngorongoro rim, are an opportunity to vary the pleasures beyond 4x4. Hiking in Tarangire is also possible in authorised zones, accompanied by an armed ranger.

In Arusha, at the start or end of the circuit, a detour via the Cultural Heritage Centre and the central market allows immersion in Tanzanian crafts and culture. Arusha National Park (Mount Meru, 4,565 m) offers 1-4 day hikes for travellers with extra time.
