Four legendary national parks in a single circuit: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Manyara — the essence of African safari, accessible from Arusha.

Tanzania's Northern Circuit is arguably the most legendary of all safari circuits worldwide. It revolves around four national parks and a conservation area, all reachable by 4x4 from the town of Arusha, the country's safari capital: the Serengeti (14,750 km² of endless savannah where the Great Migration unfolds), the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (the world's densest volcanic caldera for wildlife), Tarangire (kingdom of baobabs and the largest northern elephant population), and Lake Manyara (tree-climbing lions and pink flamingos on alkaline shores).

This circuit is the matrix of African safari as the world imagines it. The continent's most iconic images — wildebeest crossing the Mara River through crocodiles, lions stretched out on kopjes at sunset, elephant herds in single file through the Tarangire baobabs, red-draped young Maasai warriors on the horizon of the plains — were born here. And all remain alive, to a degree few other African destinations can still promise. The animal density of Ngorongoro (estimated at 25,000 large mammals on 260 km²) and the intact megafauna of the Serengeti make this circuit at once predictable (the animals are there, guaranteed) and constantly surprising (each day reveals new scenes).

The Northern Circuit is also the ancestral territory of the Maasai, a semi-nomadic cattle-herding people who have lived around the parks for centuries. Meeting Maasai communities — village visits, cattle markets, traditional welcome dances — is an essential cultural dimension of a northern trip. But be selective: only a few operators offer authentic, respectful encounters; the rest often falls into staged tourism.

Logistically, the circuit runs from Arusha, 60 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Most travellers combine the four parks over 6 to 10 days, alternating 4x4 and internal Cessna flights to save time. July to October remains the prime window for the Great Migration in the northern Serengeti, but January-February is no slouch with the spectacular calving season in the south (Ndutu region).

Frequently asked questions

How many days for the Northern Circuit?+
Plan a minimum of 6 days for a tight circuit covering Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti (2 nights). 8-10 days offer real comfort to enjoy the Great Migration in the northern Serengeti and explore the crater unhurried. Many operators propose a typical format: 1 night Arusha, 1 night Tarangire, 1 night Lake Manyara, 2 nights Ngorongoro, 3-4 nights Serengeti. Beyond 10 days, you typically switch to Zanzibar for the beach portion of the trip.
How do I avoid the crowds at the Ngorongoro Crater?+
The crater is the most visited site of the Northern Circuit. Three tips: descend very early (crater entry from 6:30 am, before the groups arrive), spend 2 nights on the rim rather than just one (allowing a full day below rather than a rushed morning), and choose a lodge on the western rim (Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge) rather than the busier southern rim. Vehicles are limited to 8 hours in the crater, which keeps density reasonable despite the visitor numbers.
Where to see the Great Migration depending on the month?+
The Great Migration follows a consistent annual cycle. __January-March__: southern Serengeti (Ndutu area) — calving season, predators in action. __April-May__: central Serengeti, movement towards the north-west. __June__: Western Corridor — Grumeti River crossings. __July-October__: northern Serengeti — dramatic Mara River crossings, the great show. __November-December__: return south — concentrations on the central plains. Tell your operator which month you're travelling so they can position you in the right place.
Should I take internal flights or do everything by 4x4?+
It depends on your time. For a 6-8 day circuit, the 4x4 from Arusha with road return remains coherent. For 8-10 days and more, especially if combining with Zanzibar, __internal Cessna flights__ (Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, Regional Air) are strongly recommended: 1 hour of flying between Arusha and the central Serengeti replaces 6-7 hours of track. Count on 200-400 USD per segment. The classic formula: 4x4 on the way out (Arusha → Tarangire → Manyara → Ngorongoro → Serengeti), Cessna on the return from the Serengeti to Arusha or directly to Zanzibar.
Which is the best lodge or camp in the Serengeti?+
The best depends on season and budget. To follow the migration, __mobile camps__ (Asilia Olakira, Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp, &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas) which move 3-4 times a year with the herds are unbeatable. For a permanent lodge in the central Serengeti: Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti (luxury), Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge (very good value), Serengeti Sopa Lodge (panoramic view). In the north, near the Mara River: Lemala Mara Tented Camp, Singita Mara River Tented Camp. In the south (Ndutu, calving season): Ndutu Safari Lodge, Lake Masek Tented Camp.
Can children do the Northern Circuit?+
Yes, the Northern Circuit is compatible with families, provided some adaptation. Most lodges accept children from age 6, some from age 8 on safari (seatbelt seat required). Long 4x4 days can be tiring — prefer shorter legs and lodges with pools. Internal Cessna flights are an option to limit road hours. Many operators (Asilia, Lemala) offer family programmes with dedicated activities (bush workshops, footprint tracking, staged Maasai encounters). Expect an overall budget 20-30% higher than a standard adult trip.
Can you do the Northern Circuit in the rainy season?+
Yes, and it's even an interesting option for informed travellers. The __long rains__ (mid-March to mid-May) make the heart of the Serengeti partially impassable, but Tarangire, Manyara and Ngorongoro remain open year-round. Tariffs collapse (-40 to -60%), landscapes are exceptionally green, and parks are nearly deserted. Avoid for a first safari but consider for experienced photographers and tight budgets. The __short rains__ (November to mid-December) are less intense and don't prevent safari.

Our verdict

Tanzania's Northern Circuit is the absolute benchmark of African safari — the one that condenses the essence of wild Africa into a few days. Its combination of four parks with complementary profiles (endless savannah, closed caldera, giant baobabs, flamingo lake) makes for a rare density of experiences. Allow a minimum of 6 days for a complete circuit, 8-10 days to fully enjoy the Serengeti and the Great Migration. Combine without fail with 4-5 nights in Zanzibar to decompress on the beaches. Favour July-September for the Mara, January-February for Ndutu. And choose a serious local operator — that's what will turn a standard trip into an unforgettable experience.
