The Kilimanjaro region is mainly organised around the summit climb, but offers several complementary activities in pre- and post-climb.
The climb itself is the headline experience. Six official routes are authorised by the Kilimanjaro National Park authorities: - Marangu (5-6 days): the oldest, the only one with hut dormitories (vs camping on the others), nicknamed 'Coca-Cola route' for its relative comfort. Low success rate (55%) due to fast profile. - Machame (6-7 days): the most popular, nicknamed 'Whiskey route' for its more adventurous side. Varied and beautiful landscapes, success rate 65-70%. - Lemosho (7-8 days): the most beautiful and the longest standard version, departure from the west, traverse of the Shira plateau, maximum success rate (85%). Recommended for first-time climbers. - Rongai (6-7 days): only route departing from the north, more arid, less frequented, view of Kenya. Good alternative in case of southern rains. - Northern Circuit (8-9 days): the longest, circumnavigates the whole massif from the north. For purists and maximum acclimatisation. - Umbwe (5-6 days): the steepest and most technical, not recommended for beginners.
For preliminary acclimatisation, climbing Mount Meru (4,565 m, Tanzania's second peak, in Arusha National Park) is highly recommended. 3-4 day trek with summit reached at sunrise, exceptional view of Kilimanjaro 75 km to the east. Excellent altitude acclimatisation step before the main climb. Cost: 600-900 USD/person all-in.
The Chaga coffee plantations accessible from Moshi (Materuni, Uru, Old Moshi villages) are an excellent post-climb recovery activity. Field visits, artisan roasting demonstration, comparative tasting of local arabicas. Often combined with a walk to the Materuni waterfall (90 m high, swimming possible). Half-day 30-50 USD/person.
