When to go — Southern Tanzania

The Dar es Salaam and South region lives by the tropical maritime climate of the East African coast, with some important nuances per site.

The long dry season (June to October) is the ideal window for the South as for the North. Rains stopped, grass shortens in Nyerere, animals concentrate around the Rufiji and Ruaha rivers, maximum visibility for game viewing. At Mafia, clear sky, crystalline sea at 24-26 °C, underwater visibility 20-30 metres. In Dar es Salaam, temperatures of 24-30 °C, moderate humidity — the most breathable period of the year in this tropical city.

The hot wet season (November to March) is interesting for Mafia, which becomes one of the world's hotspots for whale shark migration (October to March, peak December-February). It's the window where swimming with these 8-12 metre giants becomes a near-guaranteed experience on observation trips. In Dar and Nyerere, heat and humidity are high (30-34 °C, 80-85% humidity), with short localised tropical showers. Calving season in Nyerere bush (November-December) attracts predators.

The long rains (March to May) are absolute low season for the South. Intense tropical rains, some Nyerere tracks become impassable, several lodges close in April-May for maintenance, rough sea at Mafia. Rates down 50-70%, but experience degraded.

The optimal window for combining safari and diving: June to October (dry season, clear sea at Mafia, maximum visibility). For those specifically targeting whale sharks: December to February (observation peak). For calving season and predator action in Nyerere: November-December or January-February.
