4.90Cirques de la Réunion

Mafate is one of Réunion's three cirques and the world's only cirque accessible only on foot or by helicopter. Covering 100 km² in the heart of the Piton des Neiges massif, encircled by vertiginous ramparts exceeding 1,000 metres of almost vertical height, it is a territory without roads, without cars, without light pollution — where 700 inhabitants live scattered in about ten îlets (hamlets) connected by a network of 100 km of trails maintained by the National Forestry Office (ONF).

The ten inhabited îlets are: La Nouvelle (the largest and most touristy, accessible from Maïdo in 3-4h), Marla (the highest, 1,660 m, on the col du Taïbit route to Cilaos), Roche Plate (in the heart of the cirque, key stage), Aurère (to the north-east, accessible from Sans Souci), Îlet à Bourse, Grand Place, Cayenne, Îlet à Malheur, Îlet aux Lataniers, Bordier. Each has family stage gîtes (€15-30/night in dormitory, €35-50/night half-board with homemade carry).

The inhabitants of Mafate are descendants of maroon slaves who took refuge in the cirque in the 18th and 19th centuries to escape the slave trade — the very name "Mafate" comes from the Malagasy "mahafaty" (which kills, dangerous), name given by slave hunters who did not dare venture there. These communities developed there a remarkable autarkic way of life, which continues today: no running water everywhere, solar electricity in most cases, helicopter supplies (fed by weekly drop), single-class school, mobile dispensary.

Dormir une ou deux nuits à Mafate, in a family gîte where you share the evening carry with the hosts, is one of the most memorable experiences France can still offer — a return to a simple, communal, disconnected way of life, under a starry sky of forgotten purity.

What we love

  • World's only cirque accessible only on foot or by helicopter — absolutely unique experience
  • Traditional way of life preserved: 700 inhabitants in ten family îlets without roads
  • 100 km of GR R2 trails and marked ONF paths, possibility of 2 to 7 day loops
  • Family stage gîte accommodation: homemade carry, authentic Creole atmosphere
  • Starry sky of exceptional purity (no light pollution), total disconnection experience

What to know

  • Access only on foot (4-8h of walking) or by expensive helicopter (€200-300)
  • Spartan comfort in gîtes: no heating, simple showers, limited solar electricity
  • Mandatory gîte reservation several weeks in advance in high season
  • Good physical condition required: significant elevation, not suitable for non-walkers
  • Car retrieval logistics to organise (entry and exit often at different points)

Frequently asked questions

How do you access Mafate concretely?+
Four main accesses by trail, to choose according to your starting point and the weather. From Maïdo (Saint-Paul, 2,205 m): descent trail to Roche Plate (3h) or La Nouvelle (4h), significant negative elevation. From Sans Souci or Deux Bras (Saint-Paul, sea level): entry via Bras de Sainte-Suzanne via the Galets trail (4-6h depending on the îlet, significant positive elevation). From Salazie (Bélouve, 1,500 m): passage via the col du Taïbit (8h, technical). From Cilaos (1,200 m): col du Taïbit or col de Fourche (5-6h to Marla). The helicopter from Saint-Gilles (Hélilagon, Corail Hélicoptères, €200-300/person one way) is the option for those who cannot walk loaded or in case of injury.
How many days do you need in Mafate?+
Minimum 2 days / 1 night for a first discovery (for example: Maïdo → La Nouvelle round trip, or Maïdo → Roche Plate → Sans Souci). 3-4 days for a classic loop with 2-3 nights in different îlets and significant traverse of the cirque. 5-7 days for a complete grand traverse (Maïdo → La Nouvelle → Marla → Cilaos by col du Taïbit). Experienced hikers can chain the GR R2 (full traverse Saint-Denis → Saint-Pierre in 11 days) which passes through Mafate on several stages.
How to book a gîte in Mafate?+
Several channels. The official site of the Fédération des Gîtes de Mafate (fede-mafate.com) centralises a large part of the offer. The site gites-mafate.com is another reference. You can also book directly by phone with each gîte (numbers available on the listed sites). Book several weeks in advance in high season (July-August), at least 2-3 weeks in intermediate season. Typical rates: €15-30/night in dormitory, €35-50/person half-board (room + breakfast + Creole dinner with carry, rice, grains, rougail). Picnic on request for the next day's hikers (€8-12).
Do you need a guide to hike in Mafate?+
No, not mandatorily, if you are an experienced and well-prepared hiker. The ONF network is exceptionally well marked (white-red GR R2 jalonnement on main itineraries, yellow markings on local trails), and the gîtes are well indicated. For more technical traverses (col du Taïbit, narrow trails on cliff-side, descent from Maïdo in winter), an accompanying middle-mountain guide (AMM) brings safety and rich cultural explanations. Rate: €250-400/day for a group of 4-6 people. The Maison de la Montagne in Saint-Denis provides IGN maps, advice and a list of approved guides.
Is the helicopter to Mafate worth the expense?+
Yes, for two profiles of travellers. For those who cannot or do not want to walk 4-8h loaded: the helicopter is the only alternative. Rate: €200-300/person one way to main îlets (La Nouvelle, Marla, Roche Plate), from Saint-Gilles (Hélilagon, Corail Hélicoptères, Réunion Hélicoptères). Count 15-20 minutes of flight. For those who simply want to overfly the cirque without landing, 30-45 minute panoramic flights cost €250-400/person — exceptional photographic experience, plunging view of the ramparts, Piton des Neiges and all the îlets. An option to consider if you do not walk in Mafate.
What equipment for Mafate?+
Middle-mountain hiking equipment: high-top hiking shoes with cleated sole (Vibram), walking poles (very useful on descents), 40-50 L backpack for 2-3 nights (carry your laundry, fleece, windbreaker, headlamp, minimal toiletry kit), 2 L/person water (refillable at gîtes), energy bars. Clothing: essential fleece and windbreaker (cold nights at altitude, 5-12°C in austral winter), hat and gloves for col passages. Headlamp (departures before sunrise), knife, first aid kit, paper copy of the itinerary.
Is there phone signal in Mafate?+
Very partially. A few isolated areas in some îlets pick up Orange or SFR signal (rarely Free Mobile), but coverage is generally non-existent in the vast majority of the cirque. The gîtes do not have wifi (with rare exceptions). This is precisely one of Mafate's strengths: a true disconnection, a return to face-to-face conversations, contemplation, evening reading by headlamp. In case of vital emergency, the gîtes have satellite communication means with rescue services (PGHM, gendarmerie). For your loved ones, warn of this communication cut before your departure — they will not be able to reach you during the stay.

Our verdict

Mafate is Réunion's signature experience — the one that alone justifies the 11-hour trip and the substantial budget. No other place in France offers this combination: an entire volcanic cirque without roads, populated by 700 inhabitants in ten family îlets, accessible only on foot after several hours of walking on the GR R2 trails. Sleeping one or two nights in a Mafate stage gîte, sharing the evening carry with the hosts, falling asleep under a starry sky of forgotten purity — it is one of the most striking experiences of contemporary French tourism. Plan 2 to 4 days for a real immersion (for example: Maïdo → La Nouvelle → Marla → col du Taïbit → Cilaos, in 3-4 days), with stage gîte booked several weeks in advance. Come between May and November for the best conditions.
