Frequently asked questions

How to access Saziley beach?+
Saziley is in the Bandrélé commune, south-eastern Grande-Terre. From Mamoudzou: 1h30 drive (50 km) via the RN1 to Bandrélé, then turn off onto an 8 km dirt track (25-30 min of careful driving). 4x4 recommended in rainy season (November-March), standard vehicle sufficient in dry season. No public transport — car essential. Free parking on arrival, 200 m trail to the beach.
Can you really see turtles snorkelling at Saziley?+
Yes, it is even one of the world's best spots to observe green turtles (Chelonia mydas) snorkelling from the shore. The turtles come to graze on seagrass beds 20-50 metres from the shore, in 1 to 3 metres of water. 20-30 m visibility in dry season. In a good session, you can observe 2 to 5 simultaneously, sometimes more. Approach them calmly, do not touch them. Ideal in the morning (8-11am) or in late afternoon (3-5pm).
When to see turtle nestings at Saziley?+
The nesting season runs November to March, peaking in December-January. Females come to lay eggs at night in the sand, generally between 8pm and 2am. Observation is strictly supervised by the RAEMA association — organised nocturnal outings (€15-25/person, 2-3 hours on site) with naturalist guides, mandatory red lamps, respected distances. Book several days in advance via the RAEMA site. Unforgettable experience, to plan if you travel in November-March.
What to bring to Saziley?+
Everything, as there are no facilities on site. Essential list: water (2 L/person minimum), picnic, snorkelling gear, water shoes, ecological sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, parasol, towel, UV t-shirt, garbage bag to take everything back. No toilets, no kiosk, no equipment rental.
Where to stay near Saziley?+
No accommodation directly on Saziley (nature reserve). Options are in the Bandrélé commune (30-40 min away): Sakouli Hotel (€130-180/night), family guesthouses (€50-90/night). For a day excursion from Mamoudzou: early departure (7-7:30am), late afternoon return. In nesting season, stay overnight in a Bandrélé guesthouse for the RAEMA nocturnal outing.
Is Saziley beach safe?+
Saziley is very safe in security terms (far from Mamoudzou's risk areas). In swimming terms: calm lagoon waters, no major danger. Precautions: wear water shoes (possible camouflaged stonefish), do not touch fauna and flora (protected nature reserve), respect distance with turtles, leave no waste. In rainy season, vigilance on the dirt track.

Our verdict

Saziley is Mayotte's preserved jewel — probably the archipelago's most beautiful beach, with its green turtles observable from the shore and its timeless setting of palm trees and white sand. It is the essential beach experience of any trip to Mayotte. Plan a full day on site: morning departure from Bandrélé or Sakouli, arrival around 9am for calm sea, two snorkelling sessions with turtles, picnic on the sand, swimming and lounging, return before late afternoon. In nesting season (November-March), come back in the evening with RAEMA to observe nesting turtles — unforgettable experience.
