Saziley

Nature reserve in southern Grande-Terre — white sand, palm trees, green turtles snorkelling from the shore, few people: probably the most beautiful beach in all of Mayotte.

4.90Grande-Terre

Saziley is probably Mayotte's most beautiful beach — fine white sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters, palm trees in the background, few people, and green turtle watching from the shore. Located in south-eastern Grande-Terre in the Bandrélé commune, it is integrated into the Saziley Nature Reserve which protects 1,800 hectares of land and lagoon — sanctuary of sea turtles, mangrove, dry tropical forest.

Access to Saziley is earned. From the national road along the east coast, a dirt track (8 km, 25-30 min of careful driving) crosses the dry forest to the beach. This track is asphalted in places but remains uneven — 4x4 recommended in rainy season (mud, ruts), standard vehicle sufficient in dry season. This difficult access keeps Saziley relatively preserved from mass tourism — one of the reasons for its intact beauty.

The beach stretches nearly a kilometre, bordered by a row of coconut and palm trees. Fine white sand, calm turquoise waters, seabed rich in seagrass and corals. This is where the green turtles come to graze — often observable while snorkelling from the shore, 20-50 metres from the bank. 20-30 m visibility in dry season, water at 26-28°C. Sometimes so many turtles that you see several in a single session. It is one of the world's best spots for snorkelling with green turtles accessible from the beach.

The beach is also a major nesting site for green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata). From November to March (peak December-January), females come to nest at night in the sand. Observation of these nestings is strictly supervised by the RAEMA association which organises nocturnal outings (€15-25/person) with naturalist guides, mandatory red lamps, respected distances. It is one of the most moving experiences a trip to Mayotte can offer.

No tourist facilities on site: no kiosk, no equipment rental, no toilets. You must bring everything: ecological sunscreen, water (2 L/person minimum), picnic or snacks, snorkelling gear, water shoes, parasol or towel, garbage bag to take everything back. The beach must remain as pristine as it is today.

Our verdict

Saziley is Mayotte's preserved jewel — probably the archipelago's most beautiful beach, with its green turtles observable from the shore and its timeless setting of palm trees and white sand. It is the essential beach experience of any trip to Mayotte. Plan a full day on site: morning departure from Bandrélé or Sakouli, arrival around 9am for calm sea, two snorkelling sessions with turtles, picnic on the sand, swimming and lounging, return before late afternoon. In nesting season (November-March), come back in the evening with RAEMA to observe nesting turtles — unforgettable experience.
