Varanasi is essentially explored on foot along ghats and by boat for panoramic view. The 4 km promenade from Assi Ghat south to Adi Keshava north is the experience backbone.
Boats are essential for the river perspective. Traditional rowing boat 200-500 INR/hour for 1-4 people. Embark preferably at Assi Ghat or Dashashwamedh Ghat.
In the old quarter, labyrinthine alleys only allow walking, and a local guide is very useful (1,500-2,500 INR half-day).
For urban trips and to Sarnath/airport: auto-rickshaws (tuk-tuks), Uber and Ola (limited coverage in old quarter).
The Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (VNS) is 26 km northwest of centre — prepaid taxi 800-1,200 INR (45 min-1h). Main domestic flights: Delhi (1h25, €60-150), Mumbai (1h45, €80-180).
