Sainte-Anne (GLP)

One of the most beautiful beaches in the French Antilles: Caravelle and its shallow turquoise lagoon, the authentic Creole village with its market, and Bois Jolan as a wild reserve for tranquillity seekers.

4.80Grande-Terre

Sainte-Anne is the family seaside heart of Grande-Terre — the most iconic commune of the Guadeloupean 'Riviera Sud', 30 minutes' drive east of Pointe-à-Pitre. With its 25,000 inhabitants spread between the picturesque village and several coastal hamlets, it concentrates some of the most beautiful beaches in the archipelago and one of the most authentic Creole atmospheres.

Caravelle Beach is the undisputed emblem of Sainte-Anne — a long white sand beach lined with coconut palms, bathed in a shallow turquoise lagoon (1-2 m deep over several hundred metres), protected by a coral reef. The legendary Club Med Caravelle (created in 1973, one of the chain's oldest, completely renovated in 2020) occupies the western part of the beach, while the eastern part has free access. It's one of the favourite beaches of Guadeloupean families on Sunday and international travellers year-round.

The Sainte-Anne village has kept a remarkable authentic Creole charm: 19th-century neo-classical church, shaded market square, lanes of colourful houses, traditional market (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday mornings) with stalls of fruits, spices and fresh fish. 3 km to the east, Bois Jolan Beach is the perfect antithesis to Caravelle: wild and protected (classed as a natural site), golden sand, shallow turquoise water, few infrastructures, preserved atmosphere. 5 km to the west, Anse du Souffleur and Helleux Beach complete the palette of Saintannaise beaches.

What we love

  • Caravelle Beach: one of the most beautiful beaches in the French Antilles, shallow turquoise lagoon, white sand
  • Bois Jolan: wild protected beach 3 km away, perfect antithesis of Caravelle (calm, authenticity)
  • Authentic Creole village with traditional market (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday mornings), 19th-century neo-classical church
  • Historic Club Med Caravelle (1973), completely renovated in 2020 — seaside tourism reference
  • Ideal for families with children: shallow water, soft sand, full infrastructure

What to know

  • Caravelle very busy between 10 am and 4 pm in peak season
  • Seaside hotels to book 4-6 months ahead for Christmas and February
  • Village restaurants saturated on Sunday lunch (local ritual)
  • Sargassum (brown algae) possible sporadically on east coast

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need to visit Sainte-Anne?+
Minimum 3 to 5 days to fully enjoy the beaches, village and surrounding excursions. 3 days: day 1 Caravelle beach and village, day 2 Bois Jolan + Anse du Souffleur, day 3 excursion to Saint-François and Pointe des Châteaux. 5 days: add Pointe-à-Pitre (Saint-Antoine market, ACTe Memorial) and a bit more leisure. For a dedicated seaside stay, plan 7 days on site with daily excursions — it's the ideal base for discovering Grande-Terre.
Is Caravelle Beach free?+
The eastern part of Caravelle is entirely free — open access, free parking (saturated in high season, arrive before 10 am), no sun loungers or service providers. The western part is privatised by Club Med Caravelle and reserved for its clients. To enjoy the beach, park at the village's public car park or the beach car park (east side) and walk 5 minutes. Bring umbrella, cooler and towels — few service providers on the beach (some lolos for drinks and snacks). Swimming safety: no surveillance, but shallow and calm lagoon.
What's the difference between Caravelle and Bois Jolan?+
Two neighbouring beaches with opposite atmospheres. Caravelle (1 km from the village, accessible by car) is the iconic beach: long, lively, equipped (Club Med, nearby restaurants), very busy. Ideal for families with children seeking comfort. Bois Jolan Beach (3 km to the east, free parking, 5 min walk access) is its wild version: golden sand, shallow turquoise water, coconut palms, few infrastructures, preserved atmosphere — classed as a protected natural site. Ideal for lovers of calm and authenticity. You can combine the two in the same day: Caravelle in the morning, Bois Jolan in the afternoon.
Where to stay in Sainte-Anne?+
Several options according to your budget. Family Creole guesthouses (€60-100/night for 2): the most authentic formula, Creole breakfast included, warm welcome from hosts. Pool residences (€100-180/night): modern comfort, full equipment, practical for families. Boutique hotels (€180-300/night): Caraïb' Bay, Le Relais du Moulin. High-end hotels: La Toubana Hotel & Spa (4 stars, €250-450/night, one of Guadeloupe's best addresses, exceptional sea view). Club Med Caravelle (all-inclusive, €200-400/person/day). Avoid hotels in the village itself (little charm), prefer beachfront or heights.
What sports activities in Sainte-Anne?+
Sainte-Anne is ideal for calm water activities (shallow lagoon, moderate trade winds). Kayak and paddle: rental on the beach (€10-20/hour, several providers on Caravelle). Snorkelling: not very interesting on Caravelle (water too shallow), better at Petite-Terre on catamaran excursion from Saint-François. Diving: a few centres in Sainte-Anne for trips to the coral reef (try-dive €60-80). Kitesurfing: more to the east, toward Saint-François and Pointe des Châteaux (constant trade winds). Sailing and catamaran: day excursions to Petite-Terre (€90-120/person). For hiking, head to Basse-Terre (Soufrière, Carbet Falls).

Our verdict

Sainte-Anne is the perfect family seaside heart of Guadeloupe — the ideal base for those who want to combine the quintessence of Caribbean beaches (Caravelle, Bois Jolan), the authenticity of a vibrant Creole village and easy access from Pointe-à-Pitre (30 min). Devote a minimum of 3 to 5 days to truly enjoy the beaches, market and excursions to Pointe des Châteaux or Saint-François. Prefer Creole guesthouses (€60-100/night) or boutique hotels (La Toubana, €250-400/night) — avoid Club Med for a real Guadeloupean experience. To enjoy Caravelle in peace, rise early (before 9 am) and return in late afternoon (after 4 pm).
