Saint-François

Grande-Terre's smartest resort: an internationally-scaled marina, the Pointe des Châteaux and its Atlantic cliffs, turquoise Petit-Havre lagoons, 18-hole Robert Trent Jones golf course and catamaran departures to Petite-Terre.

4.70Grande-Terre

Saint-François is the smartest and most international commune of Grande-Terre — a seaside resort of 13,000 inhabitants on the south-east coast, 20 minutes from Sainte-Anne and 45 minutes from Pôle Caraïbes. Its identity revolves around three iconic poles: the marina (one of the most important in the Lesser Antilles, capable of accommodating 1,000 boats), the Robert Trent Jones international golf course (18 holes, one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean) and the Pointe des Châteaux (spectacular natural site 10 km to the east).

The Pointe des Châteaux is one of the most iconic images of Guadeloupe — rocky cape battered by the Atlantic, formed of limestone cliffs eroded into spectacular shapes, topped with a monumental granite cross (1951) that culminates at 56 m altitude. The 360° panorama embraces all the satellite islands: La Désirade to the east (wild and confidential), Petite-Terre to the south-east (nature reserve), Marie-Galante to the south-west. It's one of the most popular photo spots in the archipelago — and one of the windiest: plan a light fleece in peak season.

Saint-François beaches are among the most beautiful in Grande-Terre. Raisins Clairs Beach (city centre, golden sand, constant trade winds) is the reference kitesurfing spot. Anse à la Gourde Beach (between Saint-François and Pointe des Châteaux) is a long golden beach, quieter and more confidential. Petit-Havre Beach and its protected lagoon offer perfect family swimming. Beyond the beaches, Saint-François is also the starting point for catamaran excursions to Petite-Terre (€90-120/person, full day) — the nature reserve with crystalline white sand and Lesser Antillean iguanas — and to La Désirade (ferry 45 min, €30 return) for those seeking a day of total escape.

What we love

  • Pointe des Châteaux: spectacular natural site, Atlantic cliffs, monumental cross, 360° view over satellite islands
  • International marina, one of the largest in the Lesser Antilles, gourmet restaurants by the port
  • Robert Trent Jones international golf course: 18 holes by the sea, one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean
  • Petite-Terre catamaran excursions (snorkelling, iguanas, crystalline white sand) — unmissable
  • Raisins Clairs Beach: reference kitesurfing spot, certified schools, constant trade winds

What to know

  • Most expensive resort in Grande-Terre — hotels and restaurants above the archipelago average
  • Pointe des Châteaux very windy, little shade, avoid the hottest hours
  • Sargassum (brown algae) sometimes significant on some beaches in wet season
  • Marina sometimes saturated in peak season, more international than authentically Creole atmosphere

Frequently asked questions

How to visit Pointe des Châteaux?+
Pointe des Châteaux is 10 km east of Saint-François via the D118. Free car park at the foot of the site (saturated mid-day and weekends, arrive early). From there, easy trail (30 min walk one-way) leading to the monumental cross (granite, 56 m altitude). 360° view over La Désirade, Petite-Terre, Marie-Galante and the south coast of Grande-Terre. Very windy site — bring a light windbreaker even in peak season. Avoid the hottest hours (11 am-3 pm) — little shade, blinding light. Nearby, several wild coves deserve a stop: Anse Tarare (naturist, accessible by path), Anse à la Gourde (long golden beach), Anse Kahouanne. Combine with lunch in Saint-François village on your return.
How to organise the Petite-Terre excursion?+
Petite-Terre is a national nature reserve (since 1998) composed of two small uninhabited islets, 10 km south-east of Pointe des Châteaux. Accessible exclusively by catamaran from Saint-François. Several operators (Privilège Croisières, Awak Croisières, Coyote Catamaran, Tropical Sun) offer the full day: departure 8-9 am, return 4-5 pm, on-board Creole lunch, snorkelling in the crystalline lagoon (turtles, rays, juvenile lemon sharks, parrotfish), observation of Lesser Antillean iguanas (protected species) on land. Price: €90-120/person. Mandatory booking 2-3 days in advance (often full in peak season). Sunscreen essential (little shade on board and on the islet). It's the most iconic day excursion from Grande-Terre.
Is the Saint-François golf accessible to amateurs?+
Yes, the Saint-François International Golf (signed Robert Trent Jones, 1976) is an 18-hole course by the sea open to all licensed or beginner golfers. Green fees: €90-130/person (high season), €70-90 (low season), including buggy. Mandatory online booking 2-3 days in advance. The course runs along the south-east coast with views of the lagoon and Pointe des Châteaux — one of the most beautiful golf landscapes in the Caribbean. The pro-shop rents equipment (full bag €30-40), lessons available with the pro (€60-90/hour). Restaurant and club-house bar open to all.
Which is the best beach in Saint-François?+
Several beaches stand out. Raisins Clairs Beach (city centre, easy access): golden sand, constant trade winds, reference kitesurfing spot — less ideal for swimming (strong wind) but lively. Anse à la Gourde Beach (between Saint-François and Pointe des Châteaux, 5 km east): long golden beach, quieter and more confidential, perfect for tranquillity lovers. Petit-Havre Beach (between Saint-François and Le Moule, 8 km north-west): protected shallow lagoon, ideal for families with children. Anse Tarare (Pointe des Châteaux, naturist, access by path): wild and discreet. For snorkelling from the beach, prefer Anse à la Gourde.
Where to stay in Saint-François?+
Three distinct zones. Marina: international atmosphere, gourmet restaurants, boutique hotels (Le Manganao €150-250/night). Village: more authentic but less charming, Creole guesthouses (€80-130/night). Heights and residences (toward Anse à la Gourde, golf): pool residences (€130-220/night), ideal for couples or families. High-end: La Plantation (4 stars, €200-350/night, one of the best addresses), private villas with pool and services. For family comfort, prefer residences toward Anse à la Gourde or the golf. For romantic atmosphere, La Plantation or a marina boutique hotel. Book 4-6 months in advance for Christmas and February.

Our verdict

Saint-François is the smart resort of Grande-Terre — the ideal base for combining upscale seaside, spectacular Pointe des Châteaux, Petite-Terre excursion and international golf. Devote 4 to 6 days to fully enjoy: Pointe des Châteaux + Anse à la Gourde day, Petite-Terre catamaran day (book mandatorily in advance), golf or kitesurfing day, beach days (Raisins Clairs, Petit-Havre, Anse à la Gourde). Prefer boutique hotels (La Plantation, Le Manganao) or pool residences — avoid marina business hotels. Combine with Sainte-Anne (20 min) for a complete stay on Grande-Terre's south coast.
