When to visit Saint-François?

Pointe des Châteaux is 10 km east of Saint-François via the D118. Free car park at the foot of the site (saturated mid-day and weekends, arrive early). From there, easy trail (30 min walk one-way) leading to the monumental cross (granite, 56 m altitude). 360° view over La Désirade, Petite-Terre, Marie-Galante and the south coast of Grande-Terre. Very windy site — bring a light windbreaker even in peak season. Avoid the hottest hours (11 am-3 pm) — little shade, blinding light. Nearby, several wild coves deserve a stop: Anse Tarare (naturist, accessible by path), Anse à la Gourde (long golden beach), Anse Kahouanne. Combine with lunch in Saint-François village on your return.

Petite-Terre is a national nature reserve (since 1998) composed of two small uninhabited islets, 10 km south-east of Pointe des Châteaux. Accessible exclusively by catamaran from Saint-François. Several operators (Privilège Croisières, Awak Croisières, Coyote Catamaran, Tropical Sun) offer the full day: departure 8-9 am, return 4-5 pm, on-board Creole lunch, snorkelling in the crystalline lagoon (turtles, rays, juvenile lemon sharks, parrotfish), observation of Lesser Antillean iguanas (protected species) on land. Price: €90-120/person. Mandatory booking 2-3 days in advance (often full in peak season). Sunscreen essential (little shade on board and on the islet). It's the most iconic day excursion from Grande-Terre.

The course runs along the south-east coast with views of the lagoon and Pointe des Châteaux — one of the most beautiful golf landscapes in the Caribbean. Several beaches stand out. Raisins Clairs Beach (city centre, easy access): golden sand, constant trade winds, reference kitesurfing spot — less ideal for swimming (strong wind) but lively. Anse à la Gourde Beach (between Saint-François and Pointe des Châteaux, 5 km east): long golden beach, quieter and more confidential, perfect for tranquillity lovers. Petit-Havre Beach (between Saint-François and Le Moule, 8 km north-west): protected shallow lagoon, ideal for families with children. Anse Tarare (Pointe des Châteaux, naturist, access by path): wild and discreet. For snorkelling from the beach, prefer Anse à la Gourde.
