Frequently asked questions

How many nights should I spend in Rangiroa?+
Minimum 5-7 nights to fully enjoy the diving experience. Typical itinerary: 1 arrival day and installation, 4-5 days of diving (1-2 dives/day in the Tiputa and Avatoru passes), 1 day Blue Lagoon excursion, 1 day Reef Island excursion or visit to Dominique Auroy vineyard + pearl farm. For an intensive diving stay, plan 7-10 days to do 10-15 dives and explore all the sites. Beyond 10 nights without diving, routine can set in — Rangiroa is minimalist.
Do you need to be a certified diver for Rangiroa?+
Strongly recommended to fully enjoy the experience. For the Tiputa pass and Avatoru pass, a minimum PADI Open Water or CMAS level 1 certification is required, and level 2 (Advanced Open Water) recommended for drift dives in strong current (currents can reach 6 knots). Several clubs offer try dives (1 supervised dive for beginners, €80-110) and full Open Water courses on site (€450-600 for 4 days of courses + dives). For non-divers, supervised snorkelling is excellent (€40-80/person): swim with lemon sharks in the Blue Lagoon.
How do you get to Rangiroa?+
Only by Air Tahiti flight from Papeete airport (PPT). Journey: 1 hour direct flight, 4-7 rotations per week. Prices: €200-300/person return depending on season. The Air Tahiti multi-island passes (Lagons 4 islands: Bora-Tikehau-Rangiroa-Fakarava) save on Society + Tuamotu combinations (€600-1,200 depending on pass). The Rangiroa airport (RGI) is located on the main Avatoru motu, 5 km from Avatoru village. Hotel transfers included for most accommodations.
Where to stay in Rangiroa?+
Limited accommodation. Hotel Kia Ora Resort & Spa Rangiroa (4*, the only upmarket resort, beach bungalows and overwater bungalows, €350-700/night with half-board): the premium choice for a comfortable stay. Hotel Kia Ora Sauvage (Kia Ora extension on a remote isolated motu, €400-700/night): for a total Robinson experience. Family pensions (authentic economical option, €80-180/night half-board): Pension Tuanake, Pension Cécile, Pension Loyna, Pension Henriette — warm Paumotu welcome, homemade Polynesian cuisine, transfers included. Book 3-6 months in advance.
What is the Blue Lagoon of Rangiroa?+
The Blue Lagoon is a lagoon within the lagoon — a circle of translucent turquoise water about 800 m in diameter encircled by pink-sand motus, located about 30 km south-west of Avatoru village (1 h by boat). One of the most iconic landscapes of French Polynesia. The day excursion (€80-120/person, transport + BBQ lunch on motu included) is one of the essentials of a stay in Rangiroa: exceptional snorkelling among the blacktip reef sharks habituated to human contact (shallow 1-2 m waters), walk on pink-sand motus, BBQ lunch on the beach.
Is there really a vineyard in Rangiroa?+
Yes, the Domaine Dominique Auroythe only vineyard in the South Pacific — has been established since 1999 on Avatoru motu. It produces about 30,000 bottles per year of a unique white wine on coral soil at only 15° south of the equator. Three main cuvées: Rosé de Tahiti, Blanc de Corail, Clos du Récif. The grape varieties used (carignan, vermentino, italia rosée, muscat) are adapted to the equatorial climate. Visit + tasting: €25-35/person (booking by phone +689 40 96 84 80). Bottles sold €25-50 on site.

Our verdict

Rangiroa is the most prestigious diving destination in French Polynesia and one of the three best in the world. The Tiputa pass, with its playful dolphins, grey reef sharks, manta rays and powerful current, offers an underwater experience of rare intensity. But it is a niche destination: flat coral atoll landscapes, limited and basic accommodation, calm and minimalist atmosphere. Plan a minimum of 5-7 days on site to do 6 to 10 dives and explore the lagoon (Blue Lagoon, Reef Island, Dominique Auroy vineyard). Prioritise the dry season (May to October) for optimal diving conditions. Combine Rangiroa with the Society Islands (Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora) for a balanced 12-14 night trip.
