Rangiroa

Rangiroa offers one of the three best dives in the world: the Tiputa pass, where dolphins ride the current waves, escorted by schools of grey reef sharks and manta rays. A giant atoll with infinite marine landscapes.

4.85Tuamotu

Rangiroa (Te Tirira'i Roa in Paumotu — 'the immense sky') is the main atoll of the Tuamotu archipelago and one of the world's most prestigious diving destinations. With its 1,600 km² lagoon (equivalent to the size of Martinique), it is the second-largest atoll in the world after Kwajalein (Marshall Islands). The coral ring around it measures 250 km in circumference, scattered with around fifty motus (sand and coral islets). The lagoon is so large you never see the other side from the coast — the horizon is purely marine in all directions.

The Tiputa pass, one of the two main passes connecting the lagoon to the Pacific Ocean (along with Avatoru pass), is world-famous for its dolphins. Several dozen bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) live as permanent residents in the pass and come daily to play in the waves of the incoming current at rising tide. For divers, it is an extraordinary experience: letting yourself drift in the current at 15-25 m depth, surrounded by schools of grey reef sharks (up to 200 individuals observable), manta rays, leopard rays and green turtles, while the dolphins come to observe you and ride the surface waves. Diving in the Tiputa pass (€60-90/bottle dive, Advanced Open Water level recommended for the current) is one of the three best dives in the world.

Beyond diving, Rangiroa offers unique experiences. The Blue Lagoon (1 h by boat from Avatoru village) is a lagoon within the lagoon — a circle of translucent turquoise water surrounded by pink-sand motus, with exceptional snorkelling among the blacktip reef sharks habituated to human contact (full-day excursion €80-120/person, BBQ lunch on motu included). The Reef Island (1 h 30 by boat) is a beach of motus with picturesque coral formations.

A particularity of Rangiroa: the only vineyard in the South Pacific. The Domaine Dominique Auroy, established on Avatoru motu since 1999, produces 30,000 bottles per year of a unique white wine on coral soil. The Rosé de Tahiti and Blanc de Corail wines are world oenological curiosities — the only wine produced so close to the equator. Visit and tasting €25-35/person.

Our verdict

Rangiroa is the most prestigious diving destination in French Polynesia and one of the three best in the world. The Tiputa pass, with its playful dolphins, grey reef sharks, manta rays and powerful current, offers an underwater experience of rare intensity. But it is a niche destination: flat coral atoll landscapes, limited and basic accommodation, calm and minimalist atmosphere. Plan a minimum of 5-7 days on site to do 6 to 10 dives and explore the lagoon (Blue Lagoon, Reef Island, Dominique Auroy vineyard). Prioritise the dry season (May to October) for optimal diving conditions. Combine Rangiroa with the Society Islands (Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora) for a balanced 12-14 night trip.
