Nungwi

White sand beach, turquoise lagoon without spectacular tides, and best access to Mnemba atoll — Nungwi is Zanzibar's most beautiful beach.

4.80Zanzibar

Nungwi is arguably the most beautiful beach in the Zanzibar archipelago and one of the most beautiful in Africa. Located at the northern tip of the main island of Unguja, 50 km from Stone Town (1h30 by road) and 60 km from ZNZ airport (1h45 transfer), it's a former Swahili fishing village transformed since the 2000s into a benchmark beach resort. Its exceptional geographical configuration — protruding tip in the sea sheltered by a distant coral reef, fine white sand, turquoise water always deep even at low tide — makes it a world-class beach destination.

The particularity of Nungwi compared to the rest of Zanzibar is the absence of spectacular tides. On the east-south-east coast of the island (Paje, Jambiani, Bwejuu), the sea retreats hundreds of metres at low tide, creating wet sand expanses certainly spectacular but limiting bathing to a few hours per day. At Nungwi, however, the lagoon stays deep and bathable all day, no matter the time — making it the most practical beach for a complete beach day. This singularity explains its popularity with Western tourists and the concentration of high-end resorts on the peninsula.

The main beach of Nungwi stretches over about 3 km, divided into more or less frequented zones. The north beach (Nungwi Beach proper), facing the Indian Ocean, is the most iconic: fine white sand, turquoise lagoon, traditional dhows returning to port at sunset. This is where the most prestigious resorts concentrate (Z Hotel, Hideaway of Nungwi, Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort, Riu Palace Zanzibar). The western beach (Kendwa, accessible in 15 min on foot or 5 min by taxi) is quieter, slightly less frequented, with even finer sand and even more turquoise water.

The marine life of the northern tip is exceptional. The Mnemba atoll (15 km east of Nungwi, accessible in 30-45 min by dhow or speedboat) is one of the best snorkelling and diving sites in the world: intact reefs at 5-15 metres depth, more than 380 coral fish species, regular presence of green turtles, stingrays, dolphins (schools of 20-50 individuals visible regularly).

What we love

  • Most beautiful beach in Zanzibar: fine white sand, turquoise lagoon, crystal-clear water always bathable
  • No spectacular tides: unlike Paje/Jambiani, the sea stays deep all day
  • Best access to the Mnemba atoll for world-class snorkelling and diving
  • Iconic sunsets on traditional dhows — Zanzibar's emblematic image
  • Resorts across all ranges (from backpacker to 5-star), very wide choice

What to know

  • Heavy affluence in July-August and Christmas/New Year — bookings 3-6 months ahead
  • High-end resort rates (200-600 €/night depending on season)
  • Hawkers on the beach (persistent itinerant sellers) — can be tedious for some
  • Significant distance from Stone Town (1h30 road), cultural day-trip excursions not practical
  • Limited nightlife — not Ibiza or Bali, quieter atmosphere (can be pro or con)

Frequently asked questions

How many nights to spend in Nungwi?+
__4-5 nights__ is the optimum to fully enjoy the beach and do the main excursions. Typical format: D1 arrival and check-in, D2 beach and relaxation, D3 Mnemba excursion (full day snorkelling), D4 traditional village + beach, D5 departure or extension. For __7 nights__, add: catamaran sunset excursion, diving at several sites, half-day at Kendwa, day in Stone Town. Less than 3 nights is unfortunate given the distance (1h45 from airport). More than 7 nights is possible but you can get bored if you don't love exclusively the beach.
Which resort to choose in Nungwi?+
Several categories. __Absolute luxury__: Hideaway of Nungwi (5*, 50 villas, private beach, €400-700/night), Z Hotel (boutique design hotel, iconic rooftop bar, €250-450/night). __Premium 5-star all-inclusive__: Riu Palace Zanzibar (450 rooms, immense beach, €280-500/night AI), Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort (250 rooms, €240-420/night AI), Hilton Doubletree Resort Nungwi (210 rooms, €200-380/night). __Charm boutique hotels__: Mnarani Beach Cottages (15 cottages, family atmosphere, €150-250/night), Smiles Beach Hotel (60 rooms, direct beach, €120-200/night). __Mid-range__: Langi Langi Beach Bungalows (€90-150/night), Nungwi Beach Resort (€80-130/night). __Budget__: Princess Salme Inn (€40-70/night), Amaan Beach Bungalows (€50-90/night). Favour the north beach for iconic sunsets.
Is it worth going to Kendwa from Nungwi?+
Yes, it's an excellent half-day activity. __Kendwa__ is 5 km south of Nungwi (5 min by taxi, 15 min walking along the beach at low tide), known for its even finer sand than Nungwi and its quieter atmosphere. The beach is less frequented, ideal for a real relaxation day. Several beach clubs (Kendwa Rocks, Sunset Kendwa) offer deckchairs, parasols and lunch. The famous __Full Moon Party__ at Kendwa Rocks (each full moon) has attracted backpackers and partiers for 20 years. For travellers with more time, alternating 2 nights at Nungwi + 2 nights at Kendwa is also an interesting option.
Is the Mnemba excursion worth the price?+
Yes, it's probably the best possible activity from Nungwi. __Mnemba atoll__ (private, managed by the exclusive &Beyond Mnemba resort — 6 villas at 3,000+ USD/night) is surrounded by a protected coral reef ranked among the best snorkelling sites in the world. Visibility 20-30 m, more than 380 fish species, regular presence of green turtles, stingrays, dolphins. The day excursion from Nungwi (departure 7-8 am, return 2-3 pm) includes: round trip in traditional dhow or speedboat (45 min), 2-3 snorkelling sessions on reefs around the atoll, dolphin observation, lunch on Matemwe beach (Mnemba itself is inaccessible to non-residents). Count 70-120 USD/person depending on boat standing, mask/snorkel/fins provided.
Can culture (Stone Town) and beach (Nungwi) be combined?+
Yes, it's even the recommended combination for most travellers. Classic format: __2 nights in Stone Town + 4-5 nights in Nungwi__. Logistics: arrival at ZNZ airport, transfer to Stone Town (15 min), 2 days of cultural visit (old city, slave market memorial, Darajani market, Forodhani night market), then transfer to Nungwi in private taxi (1h30, 60-80 USD negotiated) or via the resort. The return is direct from Nungwi to ZNZ airport (1h45, 60-80 USD). Avoid staying in Stone Town and doing daily round trips to Nungwi: it's exhausting and inefficient.
Are there persistent hawkers at Nungwi?+
Yes, it's one of the main drawbacks of Nungwi compared to more exclusive beaches (Matemwe, Mnemba). On the public beach between resorts, __hawkers__ (sometimes persistent) offer: snorkelling excursions, diving, catamaran, dolphin observation, parasailing, massages, jewellery, paintings, sculptures, kanga fabrics. If you want absolute tranquillity, stay in the private beach zone of your resort (the best hotels have security personnel to keep sellers away). If you accept interaction, you can negotiate decent prices for excursions (often cheaper than at the resort) but check service provider reliability. A firm but polite 'asante, hapana' (thanks, no in Swahili) is generally respected.
Is Nungwi suitable for families with children?+
Very suitable. Several advantages: __protected lagoon__ and always bathable (low tides), shallow warm water (28-29 °C in austral summer, 24-26 °C in dry season), fine sand beaches without rocks or currents, family resorts with pools and children's activities (Riu Palace Zanzibar, Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort, Hilton Doubletree). Mnemba excursions are possible from age 6 (supervised snorkelling), dolphin observation from 4-5. Avoid diving outings for under 10. Health risk: malaria is present in Zanzibar (low but real), antimalarial treatment recommended for children, DEET 20-30% repellents. Choose June-October to avoid the extreme heat of December-February.

Our verdict

Nungwi is the most beautiful beach in Zanzibar and one of the best beach spots in East Africa. Its combination of white sand, always-bathable turquoise lagoon, traditional dhows at sunset and optimal access to Mnemba atoll makes it a self-sufficient destination for 4-7 nights, ideal at the end of a Tanzanian trip (after a Northern Circuit safari). Our advice: choose a resort on the north beach (Hideaway of Nungwi, Z Hotel, Royal Zanzibar) to enjoy the sunsets on the dhows. Imperatively book a day excursion to Mnemba for snorkelling. Spend half a day at the traditional village to visit the dhow construction workshops. And favour June to mid-October (optimal climate) or September (best compromise affluence/conditions).
