Things to do — Nungwi

Nungwi offers a diversity of beach and cultural activities that justify 4-7 nights on site.

Beach and lagoon activities are the main experience. Swimming in the lagoon (always deep and bathable, no matter the time) is the daily activity. Snorkelling from the beach is limited (little coral directly accessible), but excellent from a dhow at 100-300 metres offshore. Scuba diving offers several sites accessible from Nungwi: Coral Garden (15-25 m, beginners to advanced), Big Wall (25-40 m, advanced), Hunga (15-20 m, intermediates), Mnemba Island (10-30 m, the top).

The Mnemba atoll excursion is the headline activity. Departure 7-8 am in traditional dhow or speedboat (45 min sailing from Nungwi), 2-3 snorkelling sessions around the atoll (intact reefs, turtles, dolphins, rays, more than 380 fish species), lunch on Matemwe beach, return 2-3 pm. Count 70-120 USD/person depending on boat standing.

Dolphin observation (departure 6:30 am to join schools at dawn) is supervised but its ethical quality varies. Favour respectful operators (Eco+Culture, Mvuvi Dolphin Tour) that limit approach and time. Possibility of swimming amid a school with mask and snorkel. 35-50 USD/person for 3 hours.

The traditional dhow cruise at sunset is Zanzibar's iconic romantic experience. Departure 5-5:30 pm from Nungwi in lateen-sail dhow (sunset cruise), 2 hours of sailing with cocktails and amuse-bouches, return at nightfall. Count 30-50 USD/person.

Cultural activities from Nungwi are rarer than in Stone Town but exist. The traditional village of Nungwi (behind the tourist zone) welcomes visitors to discover: dhow construction workshops in wood (one of the last great centres in the Indian Ocean), sea turtle aquarium (Mnarani Marine Turtle Conservation Pond, 10 USD/person, conservation action), morning fish market (5-7 am).
