Northern
Four legendary national parks in a single circuit: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Manyara — the essence of African safari, accessible from Arusha.
Tanzania's Northern Circuit is arguably the most legendary of all safari circuits worldwide. It revolves around four national parks and a conservation area, all reachable by 4x4 from the town of Arusha, the country's safari capital: the Serengeti (14,750 km² of endless savannah where the Great Migration unfolds), the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (the world's densest volcanic caldera for wildlife), Tarangire (kingdom of baobabs and the largest northern elephant population), and Lake Manyara (tree-climbing lions and pink flamingos on alkaline shores).
This circuit is the matrix of African safari as the world imagines it. The continent's most iconic images — wildebeest crossing the Mara River through crocodiles, lions stretched out on kopjes at sunset, elephant herds in single file through the Tarangire baobabs, red-draped young Maasai warriors on the horizon of the plains — were born here. And all remain alive, to a degree few other African destinations can still promise. The animal density of Ngorongoro (estimated at 25,000 large mammals on 260 km²) and the intact megafauna of the Serengeti make this circuit at once predictable (the animals are there, guaranteed) and constantly surprising (each day reveals new scenes).
The Northern Circuit is also the ancestral territory of the Maasai, a semi-nomadic cattle-herding people who have lived around the parks for centuries. Meeting Maasai communities — village visits, cattle markets, traditional welcome dances — is an essential cultural dimension of a northern trip. But be selective: only a few operators offer authentic, respectful encounters; the rest often falls into staged tourism.
Logistically, the circuit runs from Arusha, 60 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Most travellers combine the four parks over 6 to 10 days, alternating 4x4 and internal Cessna flights to save time. July to October remains the prime window for the Great Migration in the northern Serengeti, but January-February is no slouch with the spectacular calving season in the south (Ndutu region).

Our verdict
Tanzania's Northern Circuit is the absolute benchmark of African safari — the one that condenses the essence of wild Africa into a few days. Its combination of four parks with complementary profiles (endless savannah, closed caldera, giant baobabs, flamingo lake) makes for a rare density of experiences. Allow a minimum of 6 days for a complete circuit, 8-10 days to fully enjoy the Serengeti and the Great Migration. Combine without fail with 4-5 nights in Zanzibar to decompress on the beaches. Favour July-September for the Mara, January-February for Ndutu. And choose a serious local operator — that's what will turn a standard trip into an unforgettable experience.
