The Zanzibar archipelago is easily accessible from the Tanzanian mainland and offers mature internal logistics.
Access from the mainland: three options. Direct flight from Dar es Salaam (DAR) to Zanzibar (ZNZ) in 20 minutes, multiple daily flights with Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, Precision Air or ZanAir (60-90 USD/segment, book in advance). Flight from Arusha (JRO or ARK) via Coastal Aviation or Auric Air in 1h-1h15 (150-220 USD/segment, the most practical after a safari). Fast ferry from Dar es Salaam port to Stone Town, operated by Azam Marine, 2-hour crossing, 35-50 USD economy class.
Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ) is 7 km south of Stone Town. Separate immigration procedure (Zanzibar has its own migration administration, even for travellers from Dar es Salaam): plan 30-60 minutes for formalities, plus presentation of the yellow fever vaccine certificate if applicable.
From the airport to the beaches: private transfers organised by hotels (20-80 USD depending on distance). To Stone Town: 15 min, 15-25 USD. To Nungwi/Kendwa: 1h30, 60-80 USD. To Paje/Jambiani: 1h, 40-60 USD. To Matemwe: 1h15, 50-70 USD.
A few important cultural rules: outside resorts, covered dress code (shoulders and knees covered for men and women), no ostentatious behaviour in town, no alcoholic drinks in public (except in dedicated restaurants and bars). During Ramadan, local restaurants are closed during the day and it is respectful not to drink/eat/smoke in the street before sunset.
