Spain is rated a high-safety destination by the French, British and US foreign ministries, with no part of the country considered off-limits to visitors. Violent crime against tourists is extremely rare and almost always opportunistic.

The main risk is pickpocketing and bag theft, particularly active in several well-known hotspots: Barcelona's Ramblas and Gothic Quarter (the most theft-reported stretch in Spain), Madrid's metro and the area around the Puerta del Sol and the Prado, Seville's Santa Cruz neighbourhood and the banks of the Guadalquivir in summer, and crowded beaches in July and August. Organised teams work tourist trains, underground stations and the perimeters of major sights — the standard distraction-and-grab approach. Keep bags zipped and worn in front, do not leave phones on outdoor restaurant tables, and use your hotel safe for passports and spare cash.

Common tourist scams: fake winning lottery tickets offered in the street, shell-game operators at markets (illegal but persistent), unlicensed taxis at airports (always use official taxis — white with a red stripe in Madrid, black and yellow in Barcelona — or ride-hailing apps), and restaurants near major sights displaying menus without prices. Walk away calmly and you will rarely have a problem.

The terrorism threat level in Spain is officially maintained at 'high' (level 4 of 5) since the 2017 Barcelona and Cambrils attacks. Security measures at public venues, stations, airports and major sites have been significantly reinforced. This is a pan-European reality and should not deter travel; it simply warrants a calm awareness of your surroundings in densely crowded public spaces.

The most concrete climate risk for summer visitors is heat: temperatures of 42-45 °C have been recorded in Seville, Córdoba and the Extremaduran interior in recent summers. Hydrate constantly, wear a hat, schedule outdoor visits before 11am and after 6pm, and never leave children or pets in a closed car. For medical emergencies, dial 112 (pan-European) or 061 (Spanish medical emergencies). Public hospitals (hospitales) treat EU card holders on the same terms as Spanish nationals; non-EU travellers should carry comprehensive travel insurance covering repatriation and hospital costs.
