Saint Barthélemy has complex access logistics — the island has no direct flight from Europe. All connections go through Saint Martin and its SXM international airport.
Step 1 — Paris to Saint Martin (SXM): direct flights Paris-Orly via Air France (4-5 weekly rotations in winter, A350 or Boeing 777, 8h flight), Air Caraïbes (3-5 rotations in winter, A350), or via Amsterdam with KLM (9-10h total with connection). Paris-SXM return fares: €600-900 in low season, €1,000-1,400 in high season (December-March). From North America, direct flights from Miami, Charlotte, JFK, Atlanta to SXM.
Step 2 — Saint Martin to Saint Barth (SBH): 10-minute domestic flight on single-engine aircraft from SXM via St Barth Commuter (local airline, 8-seat Cessna Caravan, several daily rotations), Winair (19-seat Britten-Norman Islander), Tradewind Aviation (high-end). Fares: €80-160 one-way in standard, €200-400 one-way in premium. Booking advised 2-3 days in advance, especially in high season.
Alternative — Saint Martin-Saint Barth ferry: from Oyster Pond (French side of Saint Martin) with Voyager (45 min, €100-130 return) or from Philipsburg (Dutch side) with Great Bay Express. An option for those very sensitive to flying — but the crossing can be rough depending on swell (winter).
The landing at Saint-Jean (SBH) is one of the most spectacular in the world. The runway measures only 650 metres, bordered to the west by the Tourmente hill (15 % steep descent above the road) and to the east by Saint-Jean beach. Only 200 pilots in the world are certified for this airport. The experience is unique and remains a striking moment of the journey.
On arrival in Saint Barth, the airport is at the centre of the island, 2 km from Gustavia. Car hire is essential (public transport is virtually non-existent): agencies (Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Smart Rent A Car, Top Loc) at the airport. Count €60-100/day for a Mini Moke or small SUV (vehicles are deliberately compact due to narrow roads). Imperative booking 2-3 months ahead in high season (frequent stock-outs). Roads to French standards (right side). Taxis are expensive (€50-80 from the airport to Gustavia, €70-100 to remote beaches). The island can be crossed in 30-45 minutes from one end to the other.
