Gouverneur

One of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean: 400 m of immaculate white sand facing south, turquoise sea, framed by green hills, totally preserved (no construction). Easy access by car from Gustavia (10 min). Pirate legends and buried treasure.

4.90Gustavia et sud-ouest (Shell Beach)

The Gouverneur Beach (Anse du Gouverneur) is one of the most beautiful beaches in Saint Barthélemy — and per several international rankings, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Located on the south coast of the island, 10 minutes by car from Gustavia (capital), it stands out for its raw beauty, wild character and easy car accessibility (unlike Colombier which requires 30 min walking).

The beach unrolls its immaculate white sand over about 400 m, facing due south — orientation that gives it magnificent light throughout the day and a memorable sunset on the west side. It is framed by green hills covered with cacti, ficus and tropical shrubs, descending gently to the sand. The turquoise sea, shallow near the shore, takes on shades of deep green further offshore.

The beach is totally preservedno visible construction (the private villas on the hills are nestled in the vegetation and invisible), no service on site (no restaurant, no sun lounger rental, no toilets). Bring everything (water, snacks, umbrella, mask-snorkel for snorkelling, factor 50 sunscreen). It's a wild and preserved beach — the perfect antithesis of Saint-Jean (lively) or Shell Beach (urban).

The car access is easy: from Gustavia, take the Lurin road then follow the D209 south to the free parking overlooking the beach. The parking is limited (about 30 spaces) — arrive before 11 am in high season. Walking descent by a short path (5 min) through the cacti — walking shoes not essential but recommended for hot sand.

A local legend surrounds Gouverneur Beach. In the 18th century, the pirate Daniel Montbars ('Montbars the Exterminator') is said to have buried his treasure on Gouverneur Beach after plundering several Spanish ships. The treasure has never been found, despite many informal searches over the decades. The legend contributes to the romantic charm of the beach and fuels visitors' imagination.

The waves vary by season and swell. On the east side (right on arrival), the sea is generally calm and ideal for swimming. On the west side (left), the sea is more exposed to swell — sometimes marked waves (1-2 m in winter), ideal for bodysurf and bodyboard but to be respected by swimmers. Snorkelling is decent along the rocks at the western end (multicoloured fish, sometimes turtles) but less exceptional than at Colombier.

Frequently asked questions

How to get to Gouverneur Beach?+
Access is easy by car from Gustavia (10 minutes). Take the Lurin road from Gustavia (heading south, climb through the Lurin hills), then follow the D209 south-east. The free parking overlooks the beach, signposted. Count about 30 parking spaces — saturated between 11 am and 4 pm in high season. Arrive before 10 am to park easily. Walking descent by a short path (5 minutes) through cacti and tropical vegetation — easy, accessible to all. No public transport serves Gouverneur — car essential. No taxi available directly at the beach (order from Gustavia if needed, €30-50).
Why is Gouverneur Beach so renowned?+
Gouverneur Beach is regularly ranked among the most beautiful Caribbean beaches by travel magazines (Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler). The reasons: (1) Immaculate white sand — exceptional quality, fine and soft, no debris or algae in high season; (2) Turquoise sea with multiple shades (deep green offshore, clear turquoise near shore); (3) Total preservation — no visible construction, no building, intact natural landscape; (4) Spectacular setting — framed by green hills covered with cacti and ficus, descending gently to the sand; (5) Exceptional light thanks to the due south orientation (sun throughout the day, memorable sunset on the west side); (6) Romantic legend of Montbars' pirate treasure (18th century). It's the iconic beach of south-west Saint Barth.
Is there really a pirate treasure buried?+
The Gouverneur treasure legend is rooted in local culture since the 18th century. According to oral tradition, the pirate Daniel Montbars — nicknamed 'Montbars the Exterminator' due to his particular zeal against the Spanish — is said to have buried his treasure (gold, precious stones, silver coins) on Gouverneur Beach after plundering several Spanish galleons in the 1680s. Montbars actually existed (Languedoc-born, famous Antillean pirate), and Saint Barth was a known refuge for buccaneers at that time. The treasure has never been found despite many informal searches over the decades. Several versions of the story circulate (exact location, contents, reason for burial). It's more a romantic legend than a verified historical fact — but it greatly contributes to the beach's charm and fuels visitors' imagination. No official excavation has ever been authorised by the authorities.
Gouverneur or Saline: which to choose?+
The two beaches are neighbours (5 min by car) and both feature among the most beautiful in Saint Barth — complementary rather than substitutable. Gouverneur Beach: larger (400 m), facing due south, easy car access (parking 5 min walk away), no service, pirate legends, sunset on west side. Saline Beach: slightly smaller, 10 min walk access from the car park (through the dunes), even more preserved, gastronomic restaurant L'Esprit Saline just above (ideal for lunch or dinner with beach view). Tips: visit both during your stay (one morning each, or Gouverneur morning + L'Esprit Saline lunch + Saline afternoon). Gouverneur is more accessible and more iconic. Saline offers the advantage of a nearby gastronomic restaurant.
When to come for sunset at Gouverneur?+
The sunset at Gouverneur is one of the most beautiful in Saint Barth, seen from the west end of the beach (left side on arrival facing the sea). The sun sets behind the western hills, creating spectacular pink and orange clouds over the turquoise water. Times by season: 5:30-6 pm in winter (December-February), 6-6:30 pm in shoulder season (March-April, October-November), 6:30-7 pm in summer (May-September). Arrive 30-45 minutes ahead to settle and enjoy the colour evolution. Bring a sunset snack with champagne (bought in Gustavia or Saint-Jean) and an umbrella/sweatshirt (the coolness can surprise after sunset). The parking closes with nightfall — leave before 7:30 pm or anticipate your departure. Combine with a nearby gastronomic dinner: Le Tamarin (15 min, bohemian chic atmosphere), L'Esprit Saline (10 min, gastronomic above Saline). Book 1-2 weeks ahead.

Our verdict

Gouverneur Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean — easily accessible by car from Gustavia (10 min), preserved and wild, framed by green hills. Devote a half-day to a full day at Gouverneur during your Saint Barth stay. Arrive early (before 10 am for freshness and parking), bring EVERYTHING (mandatory umbrella, water, snacks, mask-snorkel for snorkelling), settle on the east side for calm sea and swimming. Enjoy the sunset on the west side at end of day. Ideally combine with a Gustavia morning and a gastronomic dinner at Le Tamarin or L'Esprit Saline (15-20 min drive). For families with very young children, prefer Saint-Jean (calmer sea and nearby services) in case of strong swell.
