Formalities — Saint-Barth

Aucun visa — Saint-Barthélemy est une Collectivité d'outre-mer française (COM) depuis 2007, dotée d'un statut particulier de pays et territoire d'outre-mer (PTOM) de l'Union européenne. Les ressortissants français et de l'UE peuvent s'y rendre librement avec une carte nationale d'identité en cours de validité, sans visa ni formalité particulière. Le passeport n'est pas obligatoire pour les Européens, mais reste recommandé en cas d'extension vers Saint-Martin néerlandais (transit obligatoire pour de nombreux vols).

L'accès se fait quasi-exclusivement via Saint-Martin : vol direct Paris-SXM (Sint Maarten néerlandais) puis vol intérieur de 10 minutes en monomoteur (St Barth Commuter, Winair, Tradewind) vers l'aérodrome de Saint-Jean (SBH) — célèbre pour son approche difficile au-dessus de la colline de la Tourmente, descente vertigineuse vers la piste de 650 m bordée par la plage de Saint-Jean. Alternative : ferry Voyager ou Great Bay Express depuis Oyster Pond ou Philipsburg (45 min, 100-130 € A/R). Aucun contrôle d'identité supplémentaire pour les Français.

Les ressortissants hors UE (Américains, Canadiens, Australiens, Britanniques) bénéficient d'une dispense de visa pour les séjours touristiques inférieurs à 90 jours. Le passeport doit être valide pour la durée du séjour. Côté santé, aucun vaccin n'est obligatoire ; les vaccinations universelles (DTP, hépatite B) doivent être à jour. Le risque de dengue et chikungunya est faible mais existe — protégez-vous contre les moustiques. La carte Vitale française est valable à l'hôpital de Bruyn à Gustavia et permet la prise en charge des soins.

Saint Barthélemy is one of the safest destinations in the world — virtually zero crime rate, peaceful and refined atmosphere. The permanent population is only 10,300 inhabitants, the island is tightly controlled (strict urban planning, discreet but constant police presence), the high-end clientele generates natural vigilance, and there are no tension zones. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs classes the island under normal vigilance (the lowest).

Thefts are extremely rare and concentrated on opportunities (cars left unlocked, bags forgotten on the beach). Common-sense rule: don't leave visible valuables in the car, keep your papers in the hotel, watch your belongings on the beach. Wearing jewellery is generally without risk (unlike other Caribbean islands).

Natural risks are the main concern. The hurricane season runs from June to November, peaking in August-October. Saint Barth is very exposed — Hurricane Irma (Category 5, 6 September 2017) devastated the island: 90 % of buildings damaged, considerable damage. Reconstruction is now complete and many hotels have been rebuilt to reinforced earthquake-resistant and anti-hurricane standards. The Météo-France Antilles alert system is very effective; hotel protocols are well-tested.

On health, Hôpital de Bruyn in Gustavia provides mainland-quality care (emergency, general medicine, minor surgery). For more serious cases, evacuation by plane to Saint Martin (Louis-Constant Fleming Hospital) or Guadeloupe (Pointe-à-Pitre CHU). The Carte Vitale is accepted at Bruyn. Tropical pathologies (dengue, chikungunya, zika) circulate occasionally — protect against mosquitoes (30 % DEET). The tropical sun hits hard between 11 am and 3 pm — factor 50 cream mandatory, especially for unaccustomed skin.

The sea can be rough on north-east exposed beaches (Saline, Gouverneur in winter swells, Lorient for surfing). The safest beaches for swimming: Saint-Jean, Flamands, Anse des Cayes (west side), Shell Beach (facing Gustavia). No lifeguard surveillance — stay attentive to flags and currents. In an emergency: 15 (SAMU), 17 (police), 18 (fire) or 112 (European number).
