North & Saint-Jean

The north side of Saint Barth: Saint-Jean beach with the iconic Eden Rock (since 1953) and vertiginous landings, Anse des Cayes for surfing, Lorient and its coconut palms, Pointe Milou and the legendary Le Ti St Barth — and the secret Anse de Colombier 30 min on foot.

4.80

The north and Saint-Jean region occupies the northern two-thirds of Saint Barthélemy — the most dynamic area of the island, concentrating the airfield (gateway), several of the most beautiful beaches, and a record concentration of legendary hotels. It's the island's lively seaside, more animated and more accessible than the Gustavia area.

Saint-Jean is the seaside heart of Saint Barth — at the centre of this region are the SBH airfield (famous for its approach over the Tourmente, its landings 10 m from the beach), Saint-Jean beach (white sand, turquoise lagoon), and the legendary Eden Rock (iconic hotel since 1953, perched on a rocky outcrop separating the beach into two bays). Saint-Jean also concentrates several iconic restaurants (Nikki Beach, La Plage, La Cantina), the luxury boutiques of La Villa Créole (chic shopping centre) and Pelican Beach, and most of the upscale 4-5 star hotels.

Anse des Cayes, 5 minutes west of Saint-Jean, is a small protected bay with a golden sand beach and a shallow lagoon. It's the surfing spot of Saint Barth, frequented by locals and enthusiasts (winter waves from November to April). A few seaside restaurants (notably the excellent O'Corail).

To the north-west, Anse de Colombier is one of the secret jewels of Saint Barth — a paradise beach accessible only on foot (30 min walk from the Petite Anse car park) or by boat. White sand, crystalline water, totally preserved, ideal for snorkelling. The walk along the Petite Anse trail offers spectacular panoramic views.

Anse des Flamands (5 min from Saint-Jean) is the longest beach in the north — 800 m of golden sand, turquoise water, framed by the Cheval Blanc Isle de France (LVMH, 5*) and Tom Beach hotels. It's one of the most frequented beaches by upscale hotels but access remains public.

To the east, Lorient is a picturesque hamlet with its coconut palm-lined beach (one of the most authentic on the island, popular with local families) and its evocative seaside cemetery. Further on, Pointe Milou hosts the legendary Le Ti St Barth (the island's iconic restaurant-show) and Toiny (the wildest and most natural area, Hôtel Le Toiny 5*).

Frequently asked questions

How many days in north Saint Barth?+
2-3 days are enough to enjoy the north coast, within a 4-7 day island stay. Day 1: Saint-Jean day (morning on the beach, lunch at La Plage or Nikki Beach, afternoon plane landing observation at Maho, Eden Rock aperitif). Day 2: Anse de Colombier (30 min walk out from Petite Anse, snorkelling day, walk back — bring everything: water, snacks, mask-snorkel). Day 3: morning Anse des Cayes or Lorient, afternoon Pointe Milou visit and Le Ti St Barth dinner. Combine with 2-3 days in the Gustavia region (Gustavia, Gouverneur, Saline) for a complete stay.
How to get to Anse de Colombier?+
Anse de Colombier is accessible only on foot or by boat — there is no road. Trail: start from the Petite Anse car park (at the end of road D210 north, after the Colombier village), follow the marked seaside trail for 30 minutes. Easy level but uneven at times (walking shoes recommended, or sturdy flip-flops). Bring everything: water (minimum 2 l/person), snacks, mask-snorkel, umbrella, sunscreen — no service on site. The trail offers spectacular coastal views. Plan 4-5 hours on site to enjoy it. Boat alternative: excursions from Gustavia (€60-90/person, half-day with snorkelling). The beach is one of the most beautiful on the island — totally preserved, crystalline water, ideal for snorkelling (fish, sometimes turtles).
What to do in Saint-Jean?+
Saint-Jean is the seaside heart of Saint Barth. Saint-Jean beach: morning leisure on the beach divided into two bays by the Eden Rock rocky outcrop, swimming in the calm lagoon. Plane spotting at SBH airfield: it's one of the most Instagrammable spots — planes land 10 m from the beach after the approach over the Tourmente (steep 15 % descent). Several flights per day, especially in high season. La Plage Beach or Nikki Beach: lunch on the beach (€50-150/person), festive atmosphere on weekends. La Villa Créole: chic shopping centre with luxury boutiques, restaurants (Bagatelle, La Cantina, Restaurant des Loubards), fine grocery. Eden Rock: visit (the establishment accepts non-residents for dining), aperitif at On The Rocks at sunset (to book). Activities: surfing at neighbouring Anse des Cayes, kitefoil at Grand Cul-de-Sac.
Is Eden Rock worth its price?+
Eden Rock has been the iconic hotel of Saint Barth since 1953 — founded by Rémy de Haenen, the first pilot to land on the island. The establishment (5 stars, today managed by the Oetker group) is perched on a rocky outcrop separating Saint-Jean beach into two bays — one of the most iconic locations in the world for a seaside hotel. Rates: €1,200-3,500/night in standard rooms, €4,000-10,000/night in suites, up to €15,000 in private villas in high season. Services: On The Rocks restaurant (gastronomic, open to non-residents, €150-250/person), casual Sand Bar restaurant, spa, private beach with service, pirogues and catamarans available. It's the most iconic hotel experience in the Caribbean for those who can afford it. Book 6-12 months ahead. Slightly cheaper and equally luxurious alternative: Cheval Blanc Isle de France (LVMH, Anse des Flamands, €1,500-4,500/night).
What is Le Ti St Barth exactly?+
Le Ti St Barth (at Pointe Milou, in the north-east of the island) is one of the most iconic restaurant-shows in the Caribbean — a unique mix of refined gastronomy, bohemian-chic atmosphere, live music and stage performances (dancers, drag queens, magicians) that kick off from 10 pm. The experience starts around 8 pm with a gastronomic dinner (international menu, €80-150/person excluding drinks), then the table gradually becomes a dance floor as the evening progresses. It's the festive must of Saint Barth since the 1990s — celebrities, models, jet-set mingle. Imperative booking 1-2 weeks ahead, mandatory chic dress code. Count €200-400/person with drinks and performances. Truly unique atmosphere — to experience at least once during a stay in Saint Barth.
Where to surf in Saint Barth?+
Saint Barth offers some modest but pleasant surfing spots, mainly in winter swell season (November to April). Anse des Cayes is the main spot — regular 1-2 m waves, protected bay, ideal for beginners and intermediates. Several equipment rentals (€50-80/day for board, wetsuit) and lessons (€60-100 per session, schools: Saint Barth Surf School, Salomon Surf). Toiny (east area, south of Pointe Milou) offers more marked and technical waves (intermediate-advanced), less frequented spot. Grand Saline can produce waves when south swell enters. Saint Barth is not a dedicated surf destination (prefer Saint Martin, Puerto Rico or Barbados) but offers some pleasant sessions as a complement to a seaside stay.

Our verdict

The north and Saint-Jean region is Saint Barth's lively seaside coast — the ideal base for those who want to combine a very accessible beach (Saint-Jean with Eden Rock), preserved beaches (Colombier on foot, Flamands), surfing (Anse des Cayes) and a legendary hotel scene (Eden Rock, Cheval Blanc, Tom Beach). Devote 2-3 days as part of a 4-7 day island stay: day 1 Saint-Jean (beach, Eden Rock, La Plage Beach, plane spotting), day 2 Anse de Colombier (walk out, snorkelling day), day 3 Anse des Cayes (surf) + Lorient + Pointe Milou (dinner at Le Ti St Barth). For sleeping, choose Eden Rock (Saint-Jean), Cheval Blanc (Flamands) or Le Sereno (Grand Cul-de-Sac, see Gustavia region). Combine with 2-3 days in the Gustavia region for a complete stay.
