Piton Maïdo

The most spectacular belvedere in Réunion: plunging view at 2,205 m altitude over the cirque of Mafate at sunrise — accessible by car, but to be earned by waking up before 4am.

4.80Cirques de la Réunion

The Piton Maïdo (2,205 m altitude) is one of the most beautiful belvederes in Réunion — and probably one of the most spectacular panoramas accessible by car in contemporary French tourism. Set on the western ridge of the cirque of Mafate, it offers a plunging view of more than 1,000 metres over the scattered îlets at the bottom of the cirque (La Nouvelle, Roche Plate, Marla visible in the distance), the vertiginous ramparts carved into the basalt, and the summit of Piton des Neiges (3,070 m) which closes the horizon to the south-east.

The signature experience of Maïdo is the sunrise. The rule is immutable: wake up around 3:30 am from Saint-Paul or Saint-Gilles, drive 45 minutes by the Maïdo forest road (winding, in tight switchbacks, to be travelled with caution in the dark), arrive around 5 am at the parking at 2,205 m altitude (at 0-10°C, cold wind), advance onto the belvedere, and wait. Around 5:45-6 am, the sun emerges to the east over the Indian Ocean and progressively illuminates the western ramparts of the cirque, which ignite in a few minutes — a spectacle of almost unreal beauty that remains one of the most beautiful memories of travellers to Réunion.

Beyond the sunrise, Maïdo is also the classic starting point for hikes descending to Mafate. The descent trail to Roche Plate (3-4h) or La Nouvelle (4-5h) begins right next to the parking.

The site is accessible by car free of charge: free parking (but saturated in high season from 5 am for the sunrise), no paid entry. The Maïdo forest road from Saint-Paul is paved over its entire length (45 min of road), with some panoramic stops on the way (Bélédère du Petit Bénare, view over the Bras de Cilaos). The tamarin forest of the Highlands bordering the road is one of the most beautiful primary altitude forests on the island.

Frequently asked questions

How to get to Piton Maïdo?+
Access only by the Maïdo forest road from Saint-Paul (west coast). Count 45 minutes of road from Saint-Paul, 1h from Saint-Gilles, 1h30 from Roland-Garros airport. The road is paved over its entire length (20 km), but winding in tight switchbacks with a large positive elevation (from 0 to 2,205 m). Several intermediate belvederes on the way (Bélédère du Petit Bénare). Drive carefully, especially at night for sunrise. Free parking at the terminus at 2,205 m, capacity of about 200-300 vehicles. Saturated in high season from 5 am.
What time to go for sunrise?+
Wake up at 3:30 am from Saint-Paul or Saint-Gilles. Count 45 min of road, plus 10 min of walking from the parking to the belvedere. Ideal arrival around 5:00 am to settle in, take out photo equipment, take some ambiance photos during dawn. The sun rises around 5:45-6:00 am depending on the season (earlier in November-February, later in May-August). The spectacle lasts 15-20 minutes: the first rays first illuminate the summit of Piton des Neiges (south-east) then descend progressively on the western ramparts of the cirque, which ignite in orange. Stay 30-45 minutes after sunrise for the best lights.
Do you really need to plan warm equipment?+
Yes, imperative. At 2,205 m altitude, before dawn, temperatures drop to 5-10°C in austral winter (May-November) and 10-15°C in austral summer (December-April). With the cold wind (always present at Maïdo) and morning humidity, the felt temperature can reach 0 to 5°C before sunrise. Minimum equipment: warm fleece, waterproof windbreaker, hat and gloves (rigorously), warm socks, closed shoes (no flip-flops!). A thermos of coffee or hot chocolate is much appreciated. Without this equipment, the magic moment of sunrise becomes an ordeal to forget quickly.
Can you descend to Mafate from Maïdo?+
Yes, and it is one of the classic accesses to Mafate. The descent trail starts right next to the parking and descends to Roche Plate (3-4h, negative elevation 800 m) or La Nouvelle (4-5h, negative elevation 800 m). Marked GR R2 trail, technical on the first passages (tight switchbacks, rocky terrain), then easier on the cirque traverse. Caution: if you plan to climb back the same day by the same itinerary, count 6-8h of walking round trip with 800 m of positive elevation on ascent — very demanding. Prefer the one way with night in îlet and exit by another access (Sans Souci, col du Taïbit to Cilaos). Car retrieval to organise (taxi €50-80).
Does fog often hide the view?+
It depends greatly on the season. In austral winter (May to November), the view is clear in the morning in 80-90% of cases between 5 am and 9-10 am. The fog progressively rises from the plains around 10-11 am and settles for the afternoon. In austral summer (December to April), the view is hidden 60-70% of the time, even early in the morning — tropical rains, almost permanent fog, very unstable weather conditions. This is why Maïdo is lived exclusively at sunrise and exclusively in austral winter to maximise the chances of a clear spectacle. In case of total fog, the belvedere loses 90% of its interest — but the sector retains the botanical interest of the tamarin forest of the Highlands.
Are there other activities in the Maïdo sector?+
Yes, several hikes in the sector deserve to be combined with sunrise. The tamarin forest of the Highlands: easy walks on marked trails from the parking or the Hauts Forêts (1-3h depending on the variant), through a remarkable endemic primary forest. The Grand Bénare (2,896 m, 3-4h round trip from Maïdo): ascent of the second highest peak on the island, clear view over the three cirques. The Trois Salazes loop from the parking (2h round trip, modest elevation): botanical trail through the altitude landscapes. Further on the forest road, the Petit Bénare viewpoint for an alternative view. Count a half-day to combine sunrise and botanical walk before the descent.
Is there an alternative to Maïdo to see Mafate?+
Yes, several other belvederes offer views over Mafate, but none equals Maïdo in spectacularity. The Grand Bénare (2,896 m, access by 3-4h of hiking from Maïdo) offers an even higher and more complete view over the three cirques, but reserved for hikers. The Petit Bénare viewpoint (on the Maïdo forest road, car access): partial view over the Bras de Cilaos, less spectacular than Maïdo. The Cap Noir (above Mafate on the Saint-Denis side, accessible by road then 30 min of walking): view from the north of the cirque, interesting to vary perspectives. The helicopter (Hélilagon, Corail Hélicoptères, €250-400/person for 30-45 min) remains the most spectacular but expensive option.

Our verdict

The Piton Maïdo is the contemplative experience not to be missed in Réunion. A belvedere at 2,205 metres altitude that plunges sheer over the cirque of Mafate, accessible by car in 45 minutes from Saint-Paul, free, and which offers at sunrise one of the most striking spectacles of French tourism. The golden rule: wake up at 3:30 am, be on site at 5 am, and dress warmly (fleece, hat, windbreaker — it is 0-10°C before dawn). Ideally combine with a descent to Mafate (3-4h to La Nouvelle or Roche Plate) if you are a hiker — it is one of the most beautiful entries to the cirque. Come between May and November to maximise the chances of a clear sky. To do absolutely during a stay in Réunion.
