The Philippines offer outstanding value for travelers from the United States, Europe and Australia, with a working budget of around €45 (US$50) per person per day for couples or small groups. That headline figure conceals very different realities depending on the island and the style of travel you choose.

A backpacker can live comfortably on €25–35 (US$28–40) per day: dormitory or homestay accommodation (PHP 450–800, US$8–14), meals in local carinderias (PHP 150–250 per dish, US$3–5), local transport by tricycle, jeepney and shared banca. A mid-range traveler — air-conditioned double room in a small hotel (PHP 1,200–2,500, US$22–45 a night), tourist-grade restaurants (PHP 400–700 per meal), shared island-hopping tours — comes in at €50–80 (US$55–90) per day. The high-end traveler staying in the Palawan eco-resorts or the boutique hotels of Boracay (PHP 8,000–25,000 a night, US$145–450), with private boat tours and fine dining, can easily clear €200–350 (US$220–390) a day.

By spending category, the realistic ranges look like this. Accommodation: dorm bed PHP 300–600 (US$5–11), standard double room PHP 800–2,000 (US$15–36), pool-equipped resort PHP 3,000–8,000 (US$55–145). Food: local canteen PHP 150–250 (US$3–5), mid-range restaurant PHP 400–800 (US$7–15), fine dining in Manila PHP 1,500–3,000 (US$27–55). Local transport: city tricycle PHP 20–50 (US$0.40–0.90), jeepney PHP 10–30, Grab rideshare in Manila PHP 150–400 (US$3–7). Activities: shared island-hopping tour PHP 1,000–1,500 (US$18–27), guided dive (one dive, gear included) PHP 1,200–2,000 (US$22–36), PADI Open Water course PHP 15,000–20,000 (US$270–360).

A few practical pointers. Withdraw cash in pesos at airports or city ATMs — remote islands (Coron, El Nido outside the village center) often lack reliable ATMs. Credit cards are accepted in hotels and supermarkets but rarely in small guesthouses, banca operators or tour shacks. Bargaining is acceptable for unmetered taxis and off-season accommodation but much less of a sport than in Morocco or Thailand. The Grab app is essential in Manila, Cebu and Davao to avoid taxi disputes. Mobile coverage is solid in tourist areas: pick up a local SIM (Globe or Smart) at the airport for around PHP 300–500 (US$5–9) with a generous data allowance.
