Lifou (Drehu)
Lifou is the largest of the Loyalty Islands (1,207 km²) and the most accessible (40 min flight from Nouméa-Magenta). The Jokin cliffs (50 m high), Luengoni beach with its limestone caves, and immersion in the drehu tribe make it the best first choice to discover the Loyalty archipelago.
Lifou (or Drehu in local Kanak language, which also designates the main language spoken on the island) is the largest of the Loyalty Islands with its 1,207 km². It has around 9,000 inhabitants, almost exclusively Kanak, spread across 8 large tribes. The administrative centre Wé (on the east coast) brings together the town hall, gendarmerie, market, hospital and main shops. The drehu language is still spoken daily.
Geographically, Lifou is a raised coral island, low (highest point 104 m), surrounded by fringing reefs. The limestone geology creates spectacular landscapes: vertiginous cliffs, karst caves, blowholes and sea holes.
Unmissable sites: Jokin cliffs (50 m high plunging straight into turquoise sea, with a chapel from 1898 at the summit), Luengoni beach (white sand, turquoise waters, with nearby limestone caves containing freshwater pools), Peng beach (snorkelling), Pene Hila (spectacular blowhole), Wé village (Saturday morning market), Mucaweng vanilla (plantation visit — Lifou produces some of the best bourbon vanilla in the South Pacific), Wadrilla caves (karst caves visited with Kanak guide).
Accommodation is mainly in tribal lodges (€50-100/night half-board). High-end hotels: Drehu Village Hôtel (3*, in Wé, €130-200/night), Oasis de Kiamu (3* in Mou, €150-220/night).

Plan a minimum of 3 nights on site: 1 day Jokin cliffs (panorama, chapel, descent to the cove at sunset), 1 day Luengoni beach + limestone caves + Peng beach (snorkelling), 1 day tribal immersion and visit to the Mucaweng vanilla plantation. Stay at tribal lodge for the deep cultural experience (€50-100/night half-board) or at Drehu Village Hôtel (3*, €130-200/night) for comfort. Do not forget the customary gesture at tribe entrance. Prioritise September-November (austral spring) for optimal conditions. Direct flight Nouméa-Magenta-Wanaham 40 min, €150-200/person return.
