Frequently asked questions

How to get to Mtsamboro?+
Mtsamboro is 35 km north of Mamoudzou, about 1h drive via the RN1 then RN2. Asphalted but winding road, vigilance for pedestrians and livestock. Car rental strongly recommended (€40-60/day). Collective taxis run from Mamoudzou to Mtsamboro for €5-8, with few frequencies. From Petite-Terre (airport), count 1h30 (ferry + road).
How to access Choizil islet?+
Choizil islet is 2 km offshore from Mtsamboro. Several local providers organise days from Mtsamboro beach: traditional pirogue (15-30 min crossing) or speedboat (10-15 min). Rates: €40-60/person for the day, lunch on site included, snorkelling gear provided. Several departures between 9 and 10am, return around 3-4pm. Book in advance. Possible cancellations depending on weather.
What to see while snorkelling at Choizil islet?+
Snorkelling at Choizil islet is exceptional. Preserved corals, frequent green turtles, leopard rays and stingrays, parrotfish, butterflyfish, surgeonfish, groupers, sometimes small whitetip reef sharks (harmless). 20-30 m visibility in dry season. Bring your gear or rent on site. Ecological sunscreen essential, water shoes for landing on the coral platform.
Where to stay in Mtsamboro?+
The hotel offer is limited. M'tsamboro Lodge (€130-170/night, the only real comfort hotel-bungalows), several family guesthouses in the village (€50-90/night with breakfast and often Creole dinner included). Book very far in advance, especially in high season. Another option: stay further south (Sakouli, Bandrélé) and come to Mtsamboro for the day — but 1h drive each way every day is tedious.
What to visit around Mtsamboro?+
Acoua (5 km): another Mahoran fishermen's village. M'tsahara (10 km): ylang-ylang distillery. Combani (25 km): large ylang-ylang distilleries and vanilla plantations. Hamjago (north tip, 15 km): pointe of Mayotte, deserted beaches. Northern Mtsamboro point: trail to Tanaraki beach. Plan a day to explore this northern Grande-Terre.
When is the best time to visit Mtsamboro?+
The dry season (June to October) is highly recommended: calm sea, clear sky, regular pirogue outings. It is also the humpback whale season (July-October). The rainy season (November to May) is not recommended: rough sea, cancelled pirogue outings, sometimes inaccessible beaches, cyclone risk.

Our verdict

Mtsamboro is one of Mayotte's most beautiful beach destinations — preserved white sand beach, Choizil islet within pirogue reach, authentic Mahoran fishermen's village, ylang-ylang distilleries nearby. It is the place where you touch both natural beauty (lagoon, corals, turtles) and traditional Mahoran culture. Plan at least 2-3 days on site: 1 day beach and village, 1 day Choizil islet, 1 day distilleries and excursions. Stay at M'tsamboro Lodge or in a family guesthouse for total immersion.
