Le Morne is one of the most spectacular natural sites in Mauritius. Its peninsula is dominated by Morne Brabant, a 556-metre volcanic peak listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008 for its poignant history: in the 19th century, Maroon slaves who had fled their masters took refuge in the inaccessible caves of the massif, choosing to leap into the void rather than be recaptured. The lagoon bordering the peninsula, in shades from mint green to cobalt blue, is among the finest in the Indian Ocean. It is above all the most renowned kitesurfing spot in the southern hemisphere — One Eye, named after a rock that breaks the surface, is a world reference for advanced riders. From an ultralight aircraft or helicopter, the illusion of the «underwater waterfall», created by sand currents in the lagoon, is the most shared image of Mauritius.
