Le Morne

Things to do — Le Morne

Climbing Morne Brabant is the site's flagship experience. The trail starts from the foot of the massif and climbs 556 metres in 2 to 3 hours return, crossing rare endemic vegetation. At the summit, the 360-degree view over the turquoise lagoon, the peninsula and the south-west coast of Mauritius is among the most stunning on the island. The ascent is accessible to any reasonably fit hiker, but the final metres on a rocky, sometimes exposed path require care. A local guide is recommended for the upper section.

On the water, the One Eye kitesurfing spot is the global mecca for advanced riders. Named after a rock that breaks the surface and shows only one 'eye' depending on the viewing angle, it offers a powerful left wave and some of the most consistent wind conditions on the planet. IKO-certified schools on the beach welcome all levels, from first-timers to competition athletes. Surfing, windsurfing and stand-up paddling round out the water-sports offering.

From the air — ultralight aircraft or helicopter — the underwater waterfall illusion is the most-shared image of Mauritius on social media. The phenomenon, visible between 9:00 and 14:00 on sunny days, results from currents carrying sand and silt from the reef platform towards the deep, creating the appearance of a turquoise river pouring into the deep ocean. Ultralight flights from Le Morne beach last 20 to 30 minutes and are well worth the investment (€60–90 per person).

In the lagoon, snorkelling reveals exceptional biodiversity: parrotfish, butterflyfish, stingrays and, with luck, green or hawksbill turtles gliding between coral heads. Catamaran excursions from Le Morne or Grand Baie often include a snorkelling stop in a sheltered lagoon and a meal on board. Scuba diving (PADI available on site) allows exploration of the outer reef drop-offs, with depths from 15 to 40 metres.

Ten kilometres away, Casela World of Adventures offers buggy safaris, lion and cheetah encounters, zip-lining and hikes through the Gorges de la Rivière Noire — an excellent half-day to vary the pleasures beyond the lagoon. Le Morne beach and Trou aux Cerfs, lined with casuarinas and shallow water, are perfect for family swimming on days without strong wind.
