Frequently asked questions

How much time do you need to visit Fort-de-France?+
A full day is enough for the must-sees. Morning: Grand Covered Market + fish market + La Savane + Fort Saint-Louis. Creole lunch in a city centre table d'hôtes. Afternoon: Schoelcher Library + Saint-Louis Cathedral + Aimé-Césaire park + town hall. With a day and a half, integrate the Dillon distillery (urban zone, free visit) and the heights of Didier or Balata for the sunset panorama over the bay.
How to get to Fort-de-France from the airport?+
Aimé Césaire airport (Lamentin) is 15 km from the centre, or 20-30 min depending on traffic. Three options. Car rental (to favour if you stay several days): direct via the ring road and the N1, paid Savane parking (€1-2/h). Taxi: meter fare, €25-35 by day, 30% surcharge at night and on Sundays. TCSP bus: direct line from airport to city centre in 30-40 min (€1.50), impractical with luggage.
Which days to visit the covered market?+
The Grand Covered Market is open every day except Sunday afternoon, but it's on Saturday morning (6am-1pm) that it reaches its peak: maximum abundance of fresh products, festive atmosphere, presence of producers from the heights (Morne-Vert, Fonds-Saint-Denis). Friday is also interesting to prepare the weekend. Avoid Monday (little animation). Plan 1-2 hours for a quiet visit, and do not forget the fish market nearby (facing the bay, early morning only).
Where to eat Creole in Fort-de-France?+
Several safe values in the centre. Le Yellow (Boulevard Allègre) for goat colombo and ouassous. Le Boudoir (rue Garnier Pagès) for Creole tables d'hôtes in a cosy atmosphere. Aux Vieux Foyal (Grand Market) for quick lunch in the market atmosphere (accras, Creole black pudding, daily specials). Le Vieux Foudre (Pointe Simon) for a more elaborate dinner facing the marina. The lolos (Creole snacks) of La Savane offer fast Creole catering at low prices (€8-15 per dish).
What must you absolutely see in Fort-de-France?+
Five must-sees. La Savane (vast shaded esplanade, Aimé Césaire statue, seafront). The Schoelcher Library (1893, unique architectural masterpiece in the Caribbean, prefabricated metal transported from Paris). Fort Saint-Louis (17th century, Vauban fortification, paid guided tour €8). The Grand Covered Market (spices, rums, basketry, Creole catering). The Saint-Louis Cathedral (1895, characteristic metal spire). Bonus: Aimé-Césaire memorial at the town hall, Dillon distillery (urban zone, free), pre-Columbian archaeology museum.
Can you reach the southern beaches from Fort-de-France?+
Yes, the maritime shuttle Fort-de-France — Pointe du Bout is the most picturesque option: 20 minutes crossing, €4-6 one way, several rotations per hour from 6:30am to 6:30pm from La Savane embarkation. You thus access the beaches of Trois-Îlets (Anse Mitan, Anse à l'Âne) without a car. The Anse Madame beach in Schoelcher (8 km northwest of Fort-de-France) is the closest urban beach, accessible by bus or car in 20 min.

Our verdict

Fort-de-France is the capital you love or rush through too quickly — the one that absolutely deserves a full day in any Martinican itinerary. Start early in the morning with the Grand Covered Market (the commercial soul of the island), continue with La Savane, Fort Saint-Louis, Schoelcher Library (unique masterpiece in the Caribbean), have Creole lunch in a city centre table d'hôtes, and end the afternoon with the cathedral and Aimé Césaire town hall. Imperatively avoid days of major cruise stopovers (consult the official calendar) which transform the city centre into a saturated theme park. If possible, do not sleep in Fort-de-France (limited hotel offer) and come on excursion from your base in the South or North — the maritime shuttle from Pointe du Bout (20 min) is the most picturesque option.
