Petra and the South

Getting around — Petra and the South

Petra and Southern Jordan require logistics adapted to each destination — easy between the two main poles (Petra and Wadi Rum), more complex for secondary sites.

From Amman to Petra: three options. 1) Private driver (the most practical, €100-130 for the direct 3h trip, or €150-200 with Mount Nebo/Madaba/Kerak stop en route). 2) JETT Bus (Jordan Express Tourist Transport): daily departure at 6:30 am from Amman 7th Circle, arrival at Wadi Musa (Petra) at 10 am, fare 11 JOD (€14) — economical option, comfortable but inflexible. 3) Car rental: €50-80/day, Highway 15 to Petra (3h), secure parking at the site entrance. The King's Road (Highway 35) is the panoramic alternative (6-8h from Amman) — recommended if you have time.

Petra to Wadi Rum (100 km, 1h30): private driver (€50-70) or JETT bus with connection (€15-25). The road is magnificent — descent from Petra's altitude (900 m) to the Wadi Rum desert (1,100 m altitude but radically different landscape), crossing the spectacular landscape of the Hisma chain.

At Petra: the site is visited on foot — about 10-15 km per day depending on your programme. The main entrance is 1 km from Wadi Musa village (taxi €2-5, free hotel shuttles). No cars in the site. Possibility to use: free horses (from the entrance to the start of the Siq, tip 5 JOD expected — ethically questionable, animals often tired), carriages to the Khazneh (15-25 JOD, controversial for hooves that wear the rock), donkeys to climb to the Monastery or High Place of Sacrifice (15-20 JOD — questionable animal welfare). Our recommendation: walk. The walk through the Siq is one of Petra's most beautiful experiences, and short animal rides are often ethically problematic.

At Wadi Rum: exploration only with authorised Bedouin guide (operations are managed by local Zalabia and Zawaideh tribes). No autonomous car rental possible in the park. 4x4 excursions start from the Visitor Center 7 km from the desert entrance (taxi from Wadi Musa €30-50, or included in camp packages). Camels are an authentic but slow alternative (10 km/h, €60-100 for half-day). 2-3 day treks allow total immersion.

Wadi Rum to Aqaba (75 km, 1h): private driver (€40-60) or shared taxi from Visitor Center (€20-30). Aqaba Airport (AQJ) is 1h from Wadi Rum — practical option for those ending their trip with the Red Sea.
