Frequently asked questions

How many nights for Varanasi?+
2 nights minimum, ideally 3-4 nights. A single night doesn't capture the essence. Optimal 3-night plan: D1 midday arrival (Delhi flight 1h25), settle in, north ghats walk, evening Aarti Dashashwamedh. D2 sunrise boat ride (5:30-7:30 am from Assi Ghat — absolute experience), ghat-front breakfast, nap, afternoon Sarnath excursion (10 km, taxi 400-600 INR round-trip), evening Aarti. D3 old quarter immersion (labyrinthine alleys, Kashi Vishwanath Temple observed from outskirts, street food, banarasi sari market), sunset boat. D4 departure.
How to reach Varanasi from Delhi?+
Three options. Domestic flight Delhi-Varanasi (1h25, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India, Vistara) is fastest and most comfortable, €60-150 return. Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (VNS) 26 km from centre, prepaid taxi 800-1,200 INR. Overnight train Delhi-Varanasi (Vande Bharat Express 8h, or Kashi Vishwanath Express 12h) in AC 2-tier berth 800-1,500 INR. Private car with driver (800 km, 12-14h) not recommended. Our preference: outbound flight, overnight return train.
Should I attend cremations at Manikarnika Ghat?+
Delicate question. Manikarnika Ghat is the main cremation ghat — pyres burn 24/7 for millennia (200-300 cremations/day, 80,000/year). Our position: if emotionally ready, yes — it can be one of life's most marking experiences. Strictly respect rules: never photos (absolute ban), keep distances (5-10 m minimum), stay silent. Beware of scams: fake "priests" asking for donation. The visit is free and open. Best option: observe from boat (200-500 INR) at respectful distance, emotionally more bearable.
Is Varanasi safe for solo women?+
Rather safe in classic tourist zones (main ghats, old quarter by day, ghat-front hotels), but requires heightened vigilance. The sacred city is globally respected by Hindus, more religious than festive atmosphere. Precautions: mandatory covering attire, avoid isolated alleys at night, prefer ghat-front hotels, use Uber/Ola for transfers. Main risks: fake sadhus asking aggressive baksheesh, fake Aarti guides overcharging, insistent stares. Cremations may be traumatic — don't go alone if emotionally fragile. Engage a certified official guide for first 1-2 days (1,500-2,500 INR half-day).
Is Sarnath really worth the detour?+
Yes absolutely, for Buddhist enthusiasts — one of the 4 most sacred Buddhist sites in the world (with Lumbini birthplace, Bodh Gaya enlightenment, Kushinagar death). Here in the Deer Park (Mrigadava), Buddha gave his first sermon around 528 BCE. To see: Dhamek Stupa (43.6 m, 5th century CE), Chaukhandi Stupa, Mulagandhakuti monastery remains, archaeological museum with Ashoka Lion Capital (India's national emblem since 1947), Mulagandhakuti Vihara modern temple. Half-day from Varanasi (taxi 400-600 INR round-trip).

Our verdict

Varanasi is India's most intense and marking experience — the one you never forget. Our advice: never reduce Varanasi to 1 night. At least 2 nights, ideally 3-4 nights to absorb the city's intensity without being overwhelmed. Optimal itinerary: D1 midday arrival, ghats walk, evening Aarti at Dashashwamedh; D2 sunrise boat ride (5:30-7:30 am — the absolute experience), ghat-front breakfast, nap, afternoon Sarnath excursion, evening Aarti; D3 old quarter (alleys, temples, street food), sunset boat. Recommended ghat-front hotels: Brijrama Palace (Darbhanga Ghat, palace converted, exceptional Ganges view, €250-450/night, absolute experience), Suryauday Haveli (Shivala Ghat, charming boutique, €150-250/night), Guleria Kothi (Munshi Ghat, 1900 palace, €200-350/night). Upper city comfort hotel: Taj Ganges (5-star, €200-350/night, 3 km from ghats). Period: November-March (but avoid December-January misty mornings). Bring anti-diarrhoeal medicines, water exclusively in sealed bottles, mask for crowded alleys, mosquito repellent.
