The Tuamotu archipelago is, for divers and marine-life enthusiasts, French Polynesia's ultimate destination — and probably one of the three best diving destinations in the world. The 77 coral atolls scattered across 1,500 km offer exceptional underwater conditions: visibility of 30 to 50 metres in the passes, preserved biodiversity, spectacular concentrations of grey reef sharks, dolphins, manta rays and groupers. It is a niche trip, requiring a certain curiosity for the marine world and a tolerance for simple accommodation.
For a minimalist stay (5-7 days), choose a single atoll and settle in: Rangiroa for accessibility and variety (3-4 different dives, Dominique Auroy vineyard, pearl farms), Fakarava for the magic of the UNESCO reserve and the legendary south pass, or Tikehau for calm and easy living. All pensions and lodges are organised around diving — 1 to 2 dives per day, plus snorkelling excursions and motu picnics.
With 10 to 14 days, the itinerary can combine two atolls: for example Rangiroa (5 days) + Fakarava (5 days) to live both global references of Polynesian diving. The inter-atoll flight (Rangiroa-Fakarava direct, 30 min, €80-120) makes the combination easy.
The ideal formula, for a 14-16 day trip in French Polynesia, combines the Society Islands (Tahiti 2 nights + Moorea 3 nights + Bora Bora 4 nights) with a Tuamotu atoll (Fakarava or Rangiroa, 5-6 nights). It is the perfect balance between dramatic volcanic landscapes, iconic lagoons and world-class diving.
