Frequently asked questions

How do you get to Hiva Oa from Tahiti?+
Two options. By Air Tahiti flight from Papeete (PPT): 3 h 30 flight (often with stop at Nuku Hiva or Ua Huka), 5-7 rotations per week, €400-550/person return depending on season. The Atuona-Tematahoa airport (AUQ) is 12 km from Atuona village, hotel transfer included for most accommodations (15-20 min by road). By mixed cargo Aranui 5: 12-day cruise from Papeete with stops in the 6 Marquesan islands — Hiva Oa stop included (1-2 days). Prices: €3,500-7,000/person for the full cruise. A unique cultural experience in the world.
How many nights should I spend on Hiva Oa?+
Minimum 3-4 nights on Hiva Oa to discover the essence: 1 arrival day and installation at Atuona, 1 day cultural pilgrimage at Atuona (Calvaire seaside cemetery with Gauguin and Brel graves, Paul Gauguin Museum, Jacques Brel Space, walk in the village), 1 day excursion to Puamau valley (1 h 30 by 4x4 each way, monumental tikis of Iipona, swimming, picnic), 1 free day (Hanapaaoa valley hike, Eiaone petroglyphs, Hanatekuua beach). Combine with Nuku Hiva (3-4 nights) for a complete 7-10 day Marquesan trip.
Where are the graves of Paul Gauguin and Jacques Brel on Hiva Oa?+
Both graves are at the Calvaire seaside cemetery (Cimetière Calvaire), located on the heights above Atuona village, accessible by a 15-20 min uphill walk from the village centre. Striking panoramic view over Tahauku Bay. Paul Gauguin's grave (died 8 May 1903) is a volcanic stone tombstone topped with a replica of his bronze sculpture Oviri ('The Savage', original at the Orsay Museum in Paris). Jacques Brel's grave (died 9 October 1978) is a few metres away, in black stone, simply bearing his name and that of Madly Bamy (his last companion, buried with him in 2008). Moving and silent visit. Free access, open year-round.
What are the Puamau tikis?+
The Puamau tikis are found at the me'ae Iipona (open-air temple) in the Puamau valley, 60 km east of Atuona (1 h 30 by 4x4 on paved road). It is the largest Marquesan archaeological site and one of the most impressive pre-colonial vestiges in all of the South Pacific. The ceremonial platform (pae pae) of about 100 m² is adorned with several monumental red stone tikis: the Takaii tiki (2.67 m tall, the largest tiki in the Marquesas, representing a mythical warrior), the Maki Taua Pepe tiki (female figure giving birth, particularly spectacular), the Te Tovae E Noho tiki (male figure) and the Manuiotaa tiki. The site dates from the 13th-18th century. Classified as a French historic monument. Visit included in day 4x4 excursions from Atuona (€80-120/person with lunch).
Where to stay on Hiva Oa?+
Very limited capacity. In Atuona (centre): Hôtel Hanakee Pearl Lodge (4*, the only upmarket hotel, view over Tahauku Bay, €250-450/night with half-board), Pension Moehau (family pension, €100-180/night half-board), Pension Kanahau (sea view, €120-200/night), Pension Gauguin (near the museum, €90-160/night). In Puamau (60 km east): Pension Heimata Hou (near the Iipona site, ideal if you want to plunge deep into Marquesan culture, €100-180/night). Book 3-6 months in advance, especially in dry season (July-August).
What are 'nono' and how to protect against them on Hiva Oa?+
Nono are tiny biting midges (genus Simulium) particularly present in the Marquesas, notably on the coasts and in the humid valleys of Hiva Oa. Their bites cause strong itching for several days and can leave marks. To protect yourself: strong repellent based on DEET (35-50%) applied generously and regularly, long lightweight clothing (long sleeves, light trousers), monoi oil (effective as supplement), avoid humid and wooded areas at dusk, sleep under mosquito net. Bring your repellent from home — it is expensive and less effective on site. Essential item in the bag for Hiva Oa.

Our verdict

Hiva Oa is one of the most culturally storied destinations in French Polynesia. Essential pilgrimage to the Calvaire seaside cemetery for Paul Gauguin and Jacques Brel enthusiasts, discovery of the monumental Puamau tikis (the most impressive pre-colonial vestiges of the South Pacific), hikes in wild tropical valleys. But it is a demanding destination: difficult accessibility (3 h 30 flight from Tahiti, not daily flights), very limited accommodation (Hanakee + pensions), no turquoise lagoons. Plan a minimum of 3-4 nights on Hiva Oa (combined with 3-4 nights on Nuku Hiva for a complete 7-10 day Marquesan trip). Prioritise the dry season (May to October). For a signature experience, choose the Aranui 5 cruise (12 days in the 6 inhabited islands, Hiva Oa stop included). Do not forget the nono repellent — essential.
