Itineraries — Marquesas

The Marquesas archipelago (Te Henua Enana, 'the land of men' in Marquesan) is probably French Polynesia's most demanding but also most memorable destination. Located 1,500 km north-east of Tahiti, it is the territory's most remote archipelago — 12 volcanic islands of raw and wild beauty, where black cliffs plunge directly into the ocean, tropical valleys sink into eroded mountains, and where ma'ohi culture has survived more intact than anywhere else in Polynesia.

For a plane trip (7-10 days), the classic itinerary combines Hiva Oa (3-4 days: Atuona, Gauguin and Brel graves, monumental tikis of Puamau) and Nuku Hiva (3-4 days: Taipivai and Hatihu valleys, archaeological sites, Vaipo waterfalls). The inter-island flight (Hiva Oa-Nuku Hiva, 1 h, €150-200) facilitates the combination. For more adventurous travellers with more time, add 2-3 days at Ua Pou (island of 12 spectacular volcanic pillars) or Fatu Hiva (the wildest, Bay of Virgins considered one of the most beautiful in the South Pacific).

For a signature experience, the Aranui 5 cruise is the ultimate option. This mixed cargo of 254 passengers, which supplies the six inhabited islands from Papeete, offers a 12-day voyage combining cultural tourism and authentic logistical experience. Passengers witness goods unloading, hike valleys, meet local sculptors and participate in cultural evenings. One of the most beautiful cruises in the world — count €3,500-7,000/person depending on cabin.

The Marquesas combine ideally with a stay in the Society Islands: 3-4 days on Tahiti and Moorea, then 7-10 days in the Marquesas (Hiva Oa + Nuku Hiva). It is a demanding trip but of rare intensity, for seasoned travellers who accept giving up paradise beaches for a deep cultural and natural experience.
