Marquesas

Getting around — Marquesas

The Marquesas are reached only by plane (Air Tahiti) or by the mixed cargo Aranui 5 from Papeete.

By plane, from Papeete (PPT), Air Tahiti routes include: Tahiti-Atuona (Hiva Oa) in 3 h 30 (with stop at Nuku Hiva or Ua Huka, 5-7 rotations/week, €400-550 return), Tahiti-Nuku Hiva in 3 h 30 (possible stop at Rangiroa, 6-8 rotations/week, €400-550 return). Flights are operated in ATR 72 (turboprops). The Air Tahiti Marquesas pass (€300-500) allows Marquesan inter-island flights (Hiva Oa-Nuku Hiva, Nuku Hiva-Ua Pou, etc.) — essential to visit several islands. Book 3-6 months ahead, especially in dry season.

By mixed cargo Aranui 5 (Compagnie polynésienne de transport maritime), the voyage lasts 12 days (departure and return Papeete) with stops in the 6 inhabited Marquesan islands. The ship combines cargo (40% of load) and passengers (254 people in simple cabins to upper suites). Prices range from €3,500 (interior cabin) to €7,000 (upper suite with balcony) for the full cruise. Book 6-12 months ahead — the Aranui is very sought after. The signature Marquesan experience.

On each island, land travel is done by 4x4 with driver-guide (essential for valley archaeological sites: €80-120/day for 1-4 people) or by rental car (€50-80/day, very limited choice — advance booking mandatory). Roads are narrow and winding, some tracks require a 4x4. Walking is an option for short distances (Atuona cemetery, museums, beach).

Maritime transfers between Nuku Hiva bays (Taiohae, Hatihu, Taipivai) are by private boat (€100-200/person excursion) or by 4x4 via interior roads. On Hiva Oa, the Puamau valley is accessible by 4x4 (1 h 30 from Atuona, paved road).
