Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur enjoys an exceptional Mediterranean climate: 2,800 hours of sunshine/year (French record with Corsica), hot dry summer, mild winter on the coast. But the climate varies sharply between sub-regions: the coast is more temperate than the hinterland (Luberon, Vaucluse, Upper Var), and the Southern Alps (Verdon, Mercantour) experience a mountain climate with winter snow.
Spring (April-June) is the most versatile season. April is still cool (15-20 °C) but sunny, ideal for the hinterland and perched villages without crowds. May brings the first flowering (cherry trees, poppies, first irises), perfect temperatures (18-24 °C) and the sea starts to warm (17-19 °C). June is probably the best month: ideal temperatures (22-27 °C), pleasant sea (20-22 °C), first lavender at Valensole and around Sénanque, longest days. The drawback: the long weekends (Ascension, Pentecost) attract a significant crowd.
Summer (July-August) is the apogee but also the most difficult time. Sea at 24-26 °C, maximum sunshine, festivals (Avignon, Aix, Cannes Film Festival in May, Juan-les-Pins, Marseille Plages). But heat can be punishing (35-38 °C in the Rhône Valley, Marseille and the plains), crowds are considerable everywhere, prices triple. If you come in high season, target less-crowded zones (Giens peninsula, Hyères Islands, Upper Var, Verdon) and start your visits before 9 am or after 5 pm.
September is the ideal season for those who can choose their dates. Sea still warm (22-24 °C), perfect temperatures (20-27 °C), crowds plummeting from the second week, prices halved from the 15th. The harvest is in full swing in the vineyards (Bandol, Cassis, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes-de-Provence), giving remarkable golden vine landscapes. October stays pleasant until mid-month, then Cévennes rains settle in — often intense but brief storm episodes.
Winter (November-March) is an underrated season for those seeking calm and light. The Riviera keeps a surprising mildness (12-16 °C during the day, never below 5 °C at night), almond trees in bloom in February-March are magnificent, the Nice Carnival (February) and the Menton Lemon Festival (February) animate the season. The Southern Alps (Isola 2000, Auron, Pra-Loup) offer a renowned ski season. To avoid in the hinterland: the mistral can be glacial.
