Our verdict

Avignon is one of the most beautiful historic cities in Provence — UNESCO Palace of the Popes (Europe's largest Gothic fortress), iconic Avignon Bridge, intact ramparts, Avignon Festival in July. Allow 2-3 days for the city (Palace, Bridge, ramparts, Calvet Museum, Place de l'Horloge), then 3-5 days to combine with Pont du Gard, Orange, Arles, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Visit in April-June (before the Festival) or September-October (harvest, optimal month) for the best conditions. Avoid July for the Festival if you don't like crowds and tripled prices — or book 6 months ahead to experience the unique theatrical event.
